Published Date: 01 April 2009
RANGERS pair Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor have been axed from the Scotland side for tonight's crucial World Cup qualifier against Iceland at Hampden after reports emerged that the duo indulged in a marathon boozing session in the wake of the weekend defeat in the Netherlands.
Manager George Burley dropped a hint yesterday that Craig Gordon would return in goal at the expense of McGregor after claiming that the Rangers goalkeeper had been "naive" in being blocked off while trying to prevent Holland's second goal. He also g
ave an indication that his trio of "outstanding" midfielders, captain Ferguson, Darren Fletcher and Scott Brown, would be broken up for the must-win clash against the Icelanders.

Such suggestions intensified when reports this morning claimed that McGregor and Ferguson were drinking in the bar at Cameron House hotel until Sunday lunchtime after returning from the Netherlands at around 4.00am that day and the SFA has now confirmed that the pair have been dropped for "a breach of discipline".

Even allowing for this, Burley is expected to ring the changes for a game he must win to keep Scotland's World Cup dream alive.

With four points from four games, victory over Iceland is required if they are to have any chance of reaching second place and the play-offs. The former Hearts boss is also ready to bring in right-back Alan Hutton for the injured Graham Alexander while the fit-again Stephen McManus could replace Christophe Berra.

"You have to assess every game – every game is different," said Burley. "This is a game where we've got to win, and I'll try and choose the best team that I feel is right for this particular game.

"We lost two bad goals over in Amsterdam, and if you do that in international football then it is difficult to come back.

"You can look at a lot of goals and say they were avoidable but these were easy goals for Holland.

"We were a bit naive and shouldn't have allowed ourselves to get blocked in," Burley continued.

"Teams block – we do it ourselves – but the second goal, especially, from the corner, was poor. The first goal was just bad marking. You don't allow yourself to be blocked."

To be honest its a fairly dispicable act with as Bazza Ferguson quoted earlier in the week in this paper, we couldnt afford anymore mistakes to be made.

One less mistake with Kung fu and him out the team.

Cue Pundit coming on the defence.

Disgrace of a Scotland Captain. Always has been. Picks and chooses his games...probably done the sesh on purpose...as for McGregor shouldn't have been in the team in the first place.

Best news for years: may we never see him in a Scotland jersey again. Great example for the captain to set. Rangers are welcome to him !

Good April 1 wind up.
Scotland players out on the piss. Never. We all know they're dedicated athletes and would never abuse they're bodies with alcohol.

Craig Gordon is the best goalie we have by a country mile!! So Mr McGregor, beat it!!! An I'd play Berra before Mcmanus any day. Jettison the headless chicken that is kenny miller and play Steven Fletcher up front with Ross McCormack. Job done!!!

Goals scored this season
Kenny "Headless Chicken" Miller - 11
Steven "Wonderboy" Fletcher - 8

Also Berra was all over the place on Saturday. Going up against Gudjohnsen is another jump up in class. I'm not a particular fan of McManus but at least he has experience of playing against players of his quality in the Champ League.

Plus we'd still have lost 3-0 with Gordon in goals on Sat. If you think anything else you're kidding yourself.

Two Up Front!,

Totally agree with the decision to drop them BUT why oh why were the team given permission to go for a drink in the bar at all at 4am (as reported). In this day and age "elite" sportsmen can't head to the bar for a few pints especially after a tough 90 mins plus travel. Do you think Alex Ferguson, Wenger et al would have said to their teams in similar circumstances to go and have some beer. I think not...

IMO Ferguson will be missed. We need someone to get on the ball and retain possession. If Hartley had been fit I would have played him for this reason with Fletcher, Brown and Teale/McCormack. Definitely need two up front though...

#8 Miller is not up to it. its that simple. Fletcher is a vastly superior forward.
As for that drunk McGregor - the guys a joke.
According to that weegie rag, the Evening Times, Burley has a problem with players - not surprisingly all of them play for Rangers. The problem is not Burley its the arrogant approach of Rangers players, who think the best approach for a game is getting pissed.

#8 I dont know where you are coming from when you say Berra was all over the place on Saturday. Not in the game I saw, he had a solid game and was as goods as McManus would have been. I am not biased I have no issues if McManus is back in the side tonight but to say Berra had a bad game is wrong. He was not to blame for the two headers and yes he gave away a penalty but at least we was there to get the tackle in. He was strong in the air and on the ground and incidentally I think he is faster than McManus.

There is a more serious side to this than what meets the eye.P L G was shocked to see this drinking culture at Ibrox and fell out with B F .It would appear nothing has changed. If I was Murray I`d punt the pair of them in the Summer. There is no way Rangers can win the title with these liablities around. As for McCoist and Smith they`d go too.Why should us Jambos and Hibbies care though. It does tell you that Rangers as a Football force will struggle in future to be even second .The Edinburgh teams should take this as a real incentitive to gain European Champions League places.
As for Scotland they will not miss either. Both are useless and Gordon and A N Other is a better bet.Scotland should win tonight.the real hard game is the next one. That is the one what will decide our fate.

Know what you are saying, however I'm a Scotland fan, so it is important...agreed we wont miss either. Im not anti/pro rangers, but out scottish football players surely shouldnt be thinking of anything other than tonights game.

Even after the dissapointment of holland.
TBH I would expect them to have a tipple after being gubbed by an underratted team like San Marino, Jesus it was Holland, so be it.

Predictions for this evening 2-0 Scotia

Good on George Burley! It's a pity though that he'll get the flick because Gordon Smith has, pointedly, refused to back Burley's decision. Burley's decision, in an attempt to instil discipline, will get him the chop. If that does happen, the SFA should hang their heads in shame. Ferguson is an embarassment who cherry-picks what games he plays in and should have been ditched from the squad years ago!
