CRAIG GORDON hailed the emergence of Steven Fletcher as a fully-fledged Scotland player – and insisted that Christophe Berra won't be far behind him.
The Hibs striker won his first international cap after playing the first half of the 1-1 draw against Croatia at Hampden last night.

However, fellow Capital star Christophe Berra will have to wait a little longer for his first-team bow after sit
ting out the 90 minutes on the substitutes' bench, alongside the only other remaining outfield player Garry O'Connor.

Despite Berra's absence from the field though, Gordon believes that both players have the potential to become real stars in the Scotland fold over the course of the next few years.

The former Hearts goalkeeper, of course, knows Berra well from his time at Tynecastle and the 23-year-old even stepped in to take over the captaincy when Gordon quit at the beginning of the season to join Premiership side Sunderland.

And the Black Cats stopper insisted that just being part of the Scotland set-up will be valuable experience for both players.

He said: "It was a good experience for them to get into the squad, Christophe obviously didn't get to play last night but even just being involved gives you a chance to see what it is all about.

"I am sure that he will learn from it and from training with a lot of quality players. To come away with the senior Scotland squad and see what other people do, how other clubs, players and managers work and train, can be invaluable."

Fletcher lasted just 45 minutes at Hampden before being forced off as the result of a knock that he took against Slaven Bilic's side.

The striker, who celebrated his 21st birthday yesterday, was played in an unfamiliar role, deeper than he is used to with Hibs and in the channel behind Kenny Miller.

However, he did enough in the first half to suggest that he will be given further chances to shine for his country over the coming seasons. Gordon added: "Steven took a wee knock and that was why he had to come off at half time but he did well in the 45 minutes that he did play.

"He was in a bit of a different position than he has been used to and the conditions probably didn't help him because it was quite heavy underfoot. He was also tracking back quite a lot, which is something that he has maybe not been used to with his club. But, to be fair to him, he did it well and he was willing to cover the park trying to help his defence out.

"He's got a lot of potential, he has already scored a few goals for Hibs this season and I think he has got a great future ahead of him at both domestic and international level."

Last night's match was George Burley's first as Scotland manager and Gordon is hoping that the new era at Hampden will signal a return to a major finals for the country. The Scots have not qualified for either a World Cup or European Championship for over a decade, although they came agonisingly close to booking their place at Euro 2008 under Alex McLeish. And Gordon revealed that the bitter experience of missing out so narrowly has left the Scots more determined than ever to make sure that they do the job properly under Burley.

The Croats gave the Scots' central defensive pairing of Stephen McManus – who was named captain for the day in the absence of Barry Ferguson – and Gary Caldwell all sorts of problems and opened the scoring with less than ten minutes gone.

However, the home side levelled after half an hour when Kenny Miller's angled effort deflected into the net off Josip Simunic.

Gordon admitted that the Croats had been tough opening opponents for his new boss. He continued: "They were a difficult team for us to start with, they are a good side, but we have come through it okay.

"We wanted to make sure that it was more than a friendly, it was the first game for the new manager and I think all of the players wanted to lay down a marker for inclusion in the rest of the games in the qualifiers.

"We had something to play for out there – okay they are looking ahead to Euro 2008, but we are already starting to build for the World Cup campaign. Everyone wanted to show that whoever comes to Hampden will get a hard game. We came close the last time and we have to take that experience and use it to our advantage for the World Cup and make sure that we go one better this time."

You are an idiot *1*

Thought Scotland played well last night and considering it was a threadbare squad they all played as a team.
Missed the creative spark of a McFadden but against a top quality side we adapted well.

A wee bit dissapointed Berra did't get on for Mcmanus for 10 minutes or so but he will have plenty of opportunities in the years to come.

Let the new Scotland era commence on a very good footing!!

Congrats to Steven Fletcheron his first cap for Scotland.

Sorry not to see Christophe getting his but i'm sure it'll come sometime soon. By all accounts Caldwell played very well last night although McManus was a bit shaky at times.

Still a great result for the Scots team and the players who bothered to turn up... friendly or not, when did playing for your country become less of an accolade than an spl game?

good to see a non bigoted couple of posts from our edinburgh bretheren.

Still think the "flair Players" should never wear a Scotland top again, a top 10 team and these KHANTS don't want to risk ripping thier tights.......

They weegies undoubtably the shame and scurge of Scottish football....

The no-shows from last night should hang there heads. It certainly doesn't bode well for Burley considering it was his first game. If they really were injured then they shouldn't play on Sat, if they do play, I would keep them out of the Scotland team until they have earned the right to be recalled.

The player who didn't play are all of sernior stature and failure to turn up sets a very bad example to the rest of the squad making the game loose its real emphasis. I wonder how 'sir walter' would have reacted during his time in charge?

Anyway, very decent performance last night. Good luck George and the boys who show commitment to their country.

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

That was the centre half pairing last night *6* as i said you are a daftie who knows nothing about football by the sounds of it.
Berra will get his chance and Fletcher will be a mainstay in the squad aswell after an assured performance i just don't get your point. Then again i never do as you babble quite a lot.

The subs last night were for me a bit bizarre.

Why give Alexander a run out for 10 minutes and have to move McEveley into left wing? Surely it was an ideal chance to give Berra a cap, go to 3 at the back and match Croatia's 5 in midfield?

Would give a few of the players from the U-21's a chance ahead of the OF drop outs for the next friendly as a wee warning before the qualifiers start in September.

Agree on both points. It was an ideal opportunity to throw on Berra don't really see the benefit in playing Alexander who is past it and won't play if everybody was fully fit anyway.

Guys like McCormack and Naismith must be knocking on the door ahead of the likes of Gary Teale.

Are you talking about Davie Weir? He is the only one you can mean and he is extremely close to 40. All the other absentees play in other positions. Whos to say Weir wasn't overlooked because of his age although Alexander and Teale was a strange one for the same reason.
Berra will have his chance when the first choice pairing of Mcmanus and Caldwell are unavailable due to injury and suspensions as he is young and consistant and captain of Hearts at a very young age.

Good performance by Scotland last night particularly after going one nil down. Was impressed with Gordon, Hartley and Hutton in particular.

Whilst I can understand that old firm match on Saturday is important, I think this is our best chance to reach a major finals since France 98 and it would be a shame to blow it.

WHAT! - you really are a bitter little man aren't you?
Why try to turn this into a "who's better ? Fletcher or Berra" debate? You might as well reignite the old Daddy/Chips argument.
2 different players, for what it's worth Berra is now - what? - 4th choice CB for Scotland? And Fletcher, maybe 3rd choice for CF? After Miller and McFadden, maybe Boyd too?

So light years is just being silly, right now Fletcher is closer to the Scotland first team than Berra - he's had a better season than Berra. But Burley obviously rates Berra, and clearly won't have seen anything to put him off, so - form permitting - I'd expect both of them in the next squad.
18

GrahamL,

27/03/2008 14:23:07
#26 I think you've done quite welll today - a bronze star for you.
The sentence "I can say for sure he will be back in the team light years before Berry gets on the park" was obviously wrong, but at least I could work out what you were aiming for, so I'll let you off. Just don't make the same mistake in your 11-plus - they won't be so forgiving.

In all honesty, both players aren't first pick for the national team. With everyone available neither would get a game at the moment. Fletcher is marginally closer than Berra, but there's not such a huge difference in it that I can see why you've chosen to crow about it...

Craig Gordon should be watching His own back, Alan McGregor will be taking his number one spot from him.. thankfully!

Gary Teale is nightmare.

He should be dropped from all other squads. End of.

Guy contributes absolutely nothing any time i've seen him a scotland top.

Thought Gordon should've done better at their goal. Decent performance against a good team though.

Rangers are a disgrace.

# 8. WHAT?
Your continued reference to light years has got me thinking.
Given the distance most stars are from earth did you know that when you look up at a star flickering you are looking at something that occurred up to 200 years ago, (for most visible stars).
By a startling coincidence the galaxy which sits directly above my beloved Leith today, (The Messier 101 pinwheel galaxy) is 106 light years from earth. This therefor today provides all Hibernian fans with the opportunity to connect visually to a natural process which actually occurred prior to the time Hibs last won the Scottish Cup!
Royal Observatory is open for public viewing from 7-8pm tonight. Dont miss it!

26

Chas Niceass,

27/03/2008 15:21:05
McGregors cack, only luck saved him on at least 3 occasions in Bremen when he came for crosses with his eyes shut and missed.
Think Scotland might have got beat last night had McGregor been in goal.
Who wants a keeper that pulls out of the squad when he rips his tights anyway, Croatias keeper played on even with his dodgy tights.

Berra could easily get a Scotland cap soon. Surely we will not persist with the likes of David Weir and Christian Dailly for much longer. McManus has been below standard as well lately.

Not sure why Burley has kept in players like Gary Teale and Graham Alexander. They have had their time. It would have been better to have used the game to give some of the Rangers reserves a run out. Whittaker could have had a half after Hutton and surely Naismith is a better bet than Gary Teale?
38

It's only a game,

Musselburgh 27/03/2008 19:51:05
Reasonable game last night by all accounts, but why oh why do we persist with Maloney. He played on the right in the first half and was anonymous, then went over to the left when Fletcher went off and hey ho....anonymous.

Teale and Alexander have to be put out to pasture along with Weir. The young ones need to take up the challenge and South Africa here we come.
