Published Date: 26 March 2008
CAPITAL Scotland recruits Christophe Berra and Steven Fletcher will both make their international debuts this evening in the friendly with Croatia at Hampden Park.
Hibs top scorer Fletcher had already been told by new Scotland boss George Burley that he would earn his first cap but Berra will also feature for the full Scotland side for the first time. Berra's assured performances in the Hearts defence this season prompted recognition from national coach George Burley, who has been similarly impressed by Fletcher's 14 goals across the city.

Berra said today: "I'd love to start the game and it would be a very proud moment. I've just got to do what I'm good at when I get the chance. I know I've got the talent and the attributes and I'm still very young for a centre-back. I'll make mistakes but I'm going to learn from them and hopefully keep moving forward."

Stephen Frail, Hearts' interim manager, is encouraging the centre-back to maximise the opportunity at his disposal. Burley opted to rest David Weir, the veteran Rangers centre-back, for this evening's match in order to blood new defensive talent, and Frail senses a chance for Berra to stake a claim to partner Celtic's Stephen McManus long-term.

"It's a good opportunity, especially with Christophe being left sided. There seems to be a wee opening there and it's a new start for Scotland under a new manager. It would be great for Christophe to be part of the new set-up from the beginning," said Frail, who will attend this evening's match.

"I've got no fears over him whatsoever. The boy deserves it because he's worked for it. I'm looking forward to heading through and seeing him in action.

"I wasn't surprised by his call-up because I know how well he's been playing. I think it's well deserved and I'm delighted for him.

"Giving him the Hearts captaincy might have helped bring him on but I'm sure his performances alone would have got him there. Maybe taking that extra bit of responsibility on to his shoulders has impressed George Burley but he's performed every week for us. His hard work is being rewarded but he won't rest on that. He's always striving to make himself a better player and a better athlete."

But no doubt we will have to put up with Miller and Caldwell.

Berra has definitely improved with the introduction of the Liths at Tynecastle.

Korobochka's training is also a huge asset.

Good luck Christophe!!

Well done to Fletcher and Berra. Good to see a couple of Edinburgh based players in the squad. Think Fletcher definately deserved it, even if he's a hibee I think he could be a great player for Scotland. It will be interesting as well to see how Berra plays with another good centre half.

Hope we can see the makings of a really strong national squad, need something to cheer up a pretty grim season!

Not sure if Berra's got the class, he's no as good as Webster was. Young though and good to see that Burley is casting the net wider than Glasgow.
10

Hearts00,

Edinburgh 26/03/2008 12:32:40
I think Berra is an average young centre-half. Our defence has been very poor this year and he has been the best of a very bad bunch.

He has potential and is one of only six players I would keep from the current Hearts squad but never a Scotland player at this stage and never a Heart's captain at this stage.

I wouldnt normally wish an injury on a player but theres a few i hope get injured against Azerbaijan. Maybe then we'll get a decent side out at the weekend and give the younger lads who even at their age and inexperience are better than some of the dross thats been brought over from Lithuania

Azerbaijan 3-1 Lithuania :-)

On a more reletive point as its a scotland topic so apologies for being diverted, good to see both fletch and berra in there, hopefully both will start, Fletcherd has done well and rightly deserves his call up, so has berra, those having a go at him obviously are either at the wind up or havent a clue, Berra was solid when he played alongside pressley or webster, I always reckoned Berra would turn out better than webster, he also has something webster will never have and thats pace.

Anyway hog would start and it would be sown to Jones or Berra

I think Lithuania will adopt a 4-4-2 tonight. Is so, I'd like to see:

Karcemarskas
Papeckys, Skerla, Dedura, Klimavicius
Mikoliunas, Šemberas, Kšanavicius, Stankevicius
Velicka, Danilevicius

Šemberas can play just behind front pair in the Maradona role and Skerla should be pushed forward for set-pieces and corners.

Berra's a fine player, in a miserable season he has been the one consistant player for Hearts - I thought this was shown best in the away game against Motherwell where he was immense in terrible conditions. FFS even Gerry McNee rates him!!!!
He's composed and technically very good and will only get better. Him and Fletcher will hopefully be regulars for Scotland for the next 10 years.

Think the Berra criticism is a bit unfair. I think he has been reasonable this season in a very mediocre team, not sure if he is anywhere near ready to start but having him in the squad can only benefit the player. Its not as if we are over burdened with decent central defenders anyway.

Also why are the Hibees taunting him anyway? So you have shipped less goals, that is surely a reflection on the overall quality of the teams play, its not just down to one defender is it? I think if you had had Jose or Zaliukas you'd be struggling to! Happy to admit that Fletcher is well worth a call, can't some of you just grow up a bit?

106 also with help from his very wise interpreter and sporting director with much footballing intelligence. Do not forget these two they are an integral part of team selection days in Lithuania around a warm log fire.

111 I saw it on TV. His cupboard is huge and the fire is lovely. His wife makes them nibbles and cups of tea and they enjoy team selection day very much.

124 good link Rob.....4 points closer to the hibs...mmmmmmm.

no real hearts article - at least talk 107 had this:
Hearts: Goncalves Needs To Be Patient

Jose Goncalves has been told he faces a wait to regain his starting place at Hearts, the 22 year old last featured in February's 4-0 defeat by Rangers and has since been displaced by Lee Wallace, caretaker boss Stephen Frail told the club's website that Wallace has impressed in the first-team and Goncalves needs to be patient in his bid to return to the fold.

...looks like Jose's bum is a bit cold?

121 surprisingly no reference to the origins of STBINAWW but lots about "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"?

IRK do you think "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was inspired by STBINAWW?

Good afternoon chaps

Good luck to Scotland tonight. From a personal point of view it will be interesting to see how Fletcher gets on. Internationals are always more interesting if player(s) from your clubs are represented.

#124 Never mind Hibs can always wave their diddling stick to make sure that the points aren't deducted!
#129 Burley is being quite generous playing Fletcher and Berra. Neither are close to full international status.

130 do you mean because they dont play for the OF Prof?

I think Fletcher has definitely earned a call up. It is only a friendly after all.

Great news for FBK Kauno for new A-Lyga season.

It is reported that Kurskis and Kancelskis have today return to Kauno.

Prof, may seem biased but from watching Fletcher weekly I would say he def deserves his chance. I agree he isnt ready to start yet but def worth his place in the squad and a game in a friendly. He will be one of Scotlands top strikers in years to come so makles sense.

Cant really comment about Berra as have not seen him play too often, however a few Jambo mates
