PASSENGER numbers at Edinburgh Airport declined at a faster rate in January than in previous months, figures from operator BAA showed today.
Traffic at the airport declined by 5.8 per cent last month compared to January 2008, more than double the December decline of 2.5 per cent.

It was also nearly 12 times the 0.5 per cent decline seen in the whole of 2008.

However, of Scotland's three airports, Edinburgh reported the most positive results. Glasgow experienced a decline of 12.2 per cent in passenger numbers while Aberdeen dropped 8.6 per cent.

BAA's UK airports handled a total of 9.4 million passengers in January 2009.

Just a year or so ago - this baa bunch were mooting airport expansion and new runways as part and parcel o a necessity to boost economic growth.

If economic growth were the fact touted in the expansionist propoganda - the expansion would be happening

It just reflects the codswallop that they produce as their business case.

Perhaps if the authorities looked at the battlefield that now masquerades as Edinburgh city centre they might see a contributory factor. The incessant and useless road works in Leith Walk, Princess Street, The Mound and Queen Street are going to deter anyone from trying to catch a plane on time. Is anyone loaded with luggage and children going to arrive by train and then catch a bus to the airport. Apart from the obvious droves of flying bankers no one will bother to fly to Edinburgh, it will be easier to use Newcastle. When will Edinburgh Parish Council (aka SNP Govt) wake up, you are killing Edinburgh with your stupid road works.
