INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed producer Iain Smith has been appointed as the new chair of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Mr Smith, whose work includes classic films such as Chariots of Fire, Local Hero and The Killing Fields, will take over the role from John McCormick today.

Glasgow-born Mr Smith, whose recent credits include Children of Men and Wanted, was awarded the OBE in the Queen's 2008 New Year Honours for his services to the film industry.

He has been a director of the EIFF since November 2007 and is a member of the Scottish Screen/Scottish Arts Council joint board.

One of his first roles will be to lead the search for a co-artistic director for the 2009 event, to cover the maternity leave of Hannah McGill.

"It is an honour and a privilege to be able to take over the chair of the EIFF from John McCormick at such an exciting time in the festival's long and prestigious history," he said.

"In these changing times the Festival will lead the way towards the discovery and showcasing of new talent."
