EMERGENCY plans are being put in place to deal with mass job losses among Edinburgh's finance workers.
It emerged today that city chiefs are meeting with government bodies to discuss the risk to thousands of jobs.

City economic development leader Tom Buchanan said the first meeting of a cross-party emergency task force has already taken place. And he said they were approaching bodies including Scottish Enterprise to make sure there is a "strategy in place for job losses".

"We'll need a team in place to help people. The council has to be a facilitator in times like this, and let people know where to go for help." Councillor Buchanan has also held talks with representatives of HBoS and Lloyds TSB, and is planning to meet with bosses at RBS, to discuss the current economic situation.

Cllr Buchanan said the Capital needs to reduce its dependency on the financial sector for jobs.

"In these difficult times, while we want to continue our strength in the financial sector and protect high-value jobs, we have to look at other areas and diversify."

..we have to look at other areas and diversify says the Councillor.

Not more pubs, clubs, an expansion of the nitetime economy or a burgeoning public sector payroll I hope.

Funny how nobody bothers when manufacturing jobs go.

Now that the banks are under public ownership and we are living under neo-Communism, I think the job losses could be offset by sending people to a Gulag in Seafield.

Anyone not in the Gulag could be employed on the tramworks, then later as tram clippies, tram drivers, tram painters, tram washers etc.

We though the future would be like robots and stuff, but in reality it'll be like Tarkovsky's "Stalker".

If these banks were actually stopped from sending work to India then the number of people made unemployed would be reduced drastically.

#4 says "So glad I work for the council!"
Fluffy, that is a contradiction in terms. You either work - or you are employed by the council.
