AN article in Monday's paper incorrectly stated that the Royal Scots Guards lost 20,000 men, with a further 40,000 wounded, in fighting near the French village of Contalmaison on the first day of the Somme in 1916.
Those figures were for the entire British Army and in fact the Royal Scots suffered around 900 casualties. We apologise for the errors.

Hmmm - the editors didn't apply a credibility test to this item, did they?

60,000 troops in one regiment? We should be so lucky!

However, 900 casualties are horrific - almost a battalion, which then amounted to approx. 1,000 officers and other ranks.

I'm confused, is this apology aimed at the Royal Scots (1st Regiment of Foot) or the Scots Guards (3rd Regiment of the Guards) or is it just sloppy reporting again. There has NEVER been a regiment called the Royal Scots Guards!
