Police out in force with more officers than ever claims SNP

SCOTLAND has more police officers than ever before, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill claimed today.
Figures released by the Scottish Government showed there were 16,339 full-time equivalent officers across the country at the end of June, an increase of 118 compared to the previous quarter and the highest figure ever recorded.

In Lothian and Bord
ers there were a total of 2868 officers – 32 more than three months ago and 69 more than a year ago.

Boosting police numbers was a key manifesto pledge when the SNP won power in last year's Holyrood elections.

But earlier in the summer, the SNP was under fire after statistics showed the total number of officers at the end of March had fallen by 45 since the previous year.

Labour described that drop from 16,266 to 16,221 as a "damning indictment" of the SNP's policy on police recruitment.

However, today Mr MacAskill said the latest figures demonstrated the Scottish Government's commitment to increased policing in Scotland.

He said: "We are committed to a greater visible police presence, deterring crime and reassuring our citizens. This welcome increase in the number of officers is in part the result of our direct recruitment of new officers, over and above the recruitment plans of our police forces."

Today he was visiting Craigmillar police station to meet members of the Lothian and Borders force, including one of the new recruits and a training sergeant.

The SNP has pledged a total of £94 million to recruit an extra 1000 officers by the end of March 2011.

Mr MacAskill said: "We have set out plans to deliver a more visible policing presence on Scotland's streets and make an additional 1000 officers available in our communities.

"We are not just delivering on this but going substantially beyond, by also looking at recruitment, retention and redeployment.

"Last year, as we promised, 150 officers were recruited and paid for by the Scottish Government and are currently working in Scotland's communities.

"This year we are directly funding the recruitment of another 450 over and above forces' previous plans."

A further 200 additional officers are due to be recruited each year in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

And Mr MacAskill insisted the 1000 target would be met.

He said: "We inherited the lowest recruitment since devolution, with many officers due to retire. We've tackled that challenge head-on, and although these latest figures are reassuring, there remains much work to be done. But we are confident the resources and policies now in place will deliver improved policing for Scotland."

Earlier this week there were claims the Government had fallen short of its 150 recruitment target last year.

Police forces had indicated they planned to recruit around 173 new officers last year, before the SNP's announcement of 150 extra recruits.

But the police college at Tulliallan said only 270 had been trained – 53 short of the forecast number.

However, the Government said forces' recruitment plans changed constantly and the apparent gap was down to that, not a shortfall in the Government's pledged figure.

Earlier this morning I had almost ear-bleeding noise levels of WAILING AND SIGHING followed by almost apocalyptic GNASHING OF TEETH sounds, rounded off by the CRASHING noise of a computer keyboard being launched through the plate-glass window of a newspaper office somewhere in the Holyrood part of town.

I now realise it was Iain Swanson writing up this article.

The sinister SNP plot that was discovered by Lord FoulkesSake, continues apace it seems:

FoulkesSake: “The SNP are on a very dangerous tack. What they are doing is trying to build up a situation in Scotland where the services are manifestly better than south of the border in a number of areas.”

Interviewer Colin Mackay: ”Is that a bad thing?”

FoulkesSake: “No, but they are doing it DELIBERATELY.”

#2 LOL!

I still don't understand why the other parties don't try publicly welcoming positive stories like this though. Does it really help the cause to be negative about every aspect of the Government's programme? We all know there is only so much the Government can do, and that the differences between the mainstream parties are often only minor. If you are always being critical, that criticism loses any impact. Why not save the scaremongering and doom prophesies, and only offer criticism when it is actually warranted?

How sad that we all feel we need a lot more police. Wouldn't it be refreshing to see a politician say that their long term aim was to make us all able to live happier, free, more fulfilling lives leading to a fall in crime and ultimately reduce the need for bobbies on the beat? Maybe I'm being naive but I really don't see any cause for celebration in increasing police numbers.

See, I managed to avoid making any comments about the SNP Police State? D'oh.

"16,339 full-time equivalent officers " If they are only equivalent, then what are they in real life ????

Strange that the Scottish Police Services Authority – the body which runs Scotland's police training college in Tulliallan reported that they are 53 officers short yet MacAskill is still claiming they have delivered.
Also what does he mean by full-time equivalent officers? are these people full time fully trained officers or are they not.
If they are full time officers why not say they are and if they are not what exactly are they.

"Figures released by the Scottish Government showed there were 16,339 full-time equivalent officers"

yeah what does he mean by "full-time equivalent officers" seems to me more snp obfuscation

"Government's pledged figure" more snp twisting

If the same criteria were used to measure police headcount at end of June ... as were used in the figures that SLAB pounced upon for March... then plainly the trend IS upwards.

I'll leave it to the razor-sharp minds of the SLAB numpty leadership hopefuls to do the verification and swallow hard on the reality of the situation, which is that police numbers are on the UP.

I am completely baffled by the attitude of most of the posters on here. Many are of the belief that Labour are somehow an English and therefore Unionist creation. Please. From the rest of the world's perspective, Labour are almost a 100% Scottish invention. Its the Scots who invented Labour and have foisted them on the rest of the UK for the better part of the last 60 years. And the SNP? Just another Labour party but this time with a kilt.

These must be the most juvenile posts of any newspaper in any country on Earth. Please. Do Scotland a favour and stop talking utter tosh. The vast majority of Scots want to stay in the Union. Respect their wishes.

LondonScot writes:

"The vast majority of Scots want to stay in the Union"

I take it that you will back a referendum in 2010 to prove it then?

Thought not.

Repeating a lie does not make it true. All major polls of the straight yes/ question over the last 12 months show a statistical deadheat.
17

malcolmcean,

LondonScot also writes:

I thought that the SNP were called the Tartan Tories? So they are Tories when one side wants to attack them and socialists when the other side do?

Those who support the union are in all kinds of trouble at the moment and this muddled approach just proves it.

The Judge,

More police? Greggs profits will go through the roof!

When was the last time you saw a police officer walking the beat?

I'd be willing to bet the last time you saw one, not in a car doing 35mph in a 30 zone, he or she was standing in a shop waiting to be served.

Why is it that when a Nat politican say's something it's just a claim, but if a unionist one says something, especially if it's an attack on the SNP government it's printed as if it's the gospel?

Sorry to mess up your conspiracy theories, but the term FTEs is used so that part time workers (eg 0.5 FTE) can be counted accurately. We do have part time police officers you know.

No conspiracy here lads, move along.

#20 The poll would suggest that approx 2/3 are against independence. As a unionist and taxpayer I would welcome a referendum, as long as it contained the "scrap follyrood and pass the saving back to the taxpayer" option. As to a tory victory assisting the snp, once they start getting the country back on it's feet, and the taxpayers feel the benefits, it's more likely that the tartan trots will be the ones to suffer.
24

Senga Jean,

~25 Polls always underestimate independence for reasons obvious to those familiar with face to face polling. Secret voting is a different story. And "tartan trots" I do not think so. My Social Democratic soul is repulsed equally by extreme right and left. The SNP are good for Scotland and that makes me very happy. Obama for US President would complete my wish list!

I wonder in Mr Macaskill would like to tell the public how many police officers throughout Scotand are part time workers or are on long term career breaks.
