Magnetic toys to feel force of inspectors
TRADING standards officers are to visit every toy store in Edinburgh to ensure they are aware of new regulations regarding magnetic toys.
The Magnetic Toys (Safety) Regulations 2008, which come into force on Monday, require all magnetic toys to be accompanied by a warning.
This must tell customers that the toy has magnets or magnetic components, and that magnets sticking together or becoming attached to a metallic object inside the human body can cause serious or fatal injury.
It must also advise them to seek urgent medical help if they swallow a magnet.
The warnings must be clearly visible and legible, and be "conspicuously displayed on the packaging or otherwise attached to the magnetic toy in such a way as to be visible to the consumer at the point of purchase".
Councillor Robert Aldridge, the city's environment leader, said: "Magnetic toys or toys with magnetic components can be extremely dangerous to human health.
"If a child accidentally swallowed a magnet, they could suffer serious or even fatal injury.
"We need to make sure that parents are aware of the risks, which is why our officers will be paying visits to toy retailers across the city in the coming days."
