THE Green Party has chosen local campaigner Kate Joester as its candidate for next month's Forth ward council by-election.
Ms Joester is a community health worker and mother of two small children, who lives in Wardie. She is a long-standing campaigner on poverty and environment issues and has been involved in the fight against Lothian Buses' ban on prams.

The by-election will be on November 6 and follows the death of Labour councillor Elizabeth Maginnis last month.

Ms Joester said: "This is the area I live in. It's a really diverse place, with some of the most deprived parts of Edinburgh alongside some of the more comfortable. It's also an area that is seeing very rapid development, without matching improvements in transport and other services.

"I'll be campaigning for better public transport, support for local shops and businesses, and a strong, safe and sustainable Forth ward."

Labour has chosen youth worker Cammy Day as its candidate, with Royston/Wardieburn community councillor George Gordon standing for the SNP.

The Lib Dem candidate is university research manager Sanne Dijkstra-Dowie and the Tories will be represented by employment agency director Iain McGill.

I hope that the Evening News will report the progress of the Green campaign in Forth in the same way as the other "main" parties - given that the Greens are one of the five parties with councillors in Edinburgh.

I'm sure the Evening News will try and cover all campaigns, but in fairness it's probably not unreasonable to report more on the parties which are likely to win.

Kate won 627 first-preference votes last year, and was up to 822 with transfers when she was eliminated. When (with four councillors to be elected) you needed more than 2000 votes to win... it would be quite an upset were she to win this time, to say the least!

Hmm,

180 words for Kate Joester of the greens- who have 3 councillors in Eedinburgh
450 words for independent John Loughton - 0 independent councillors in edinburgh
500 words for the BNP, who have 0 councillors in scotland, let alone edinburgh

It would more than a "bit of an upset" if either the BNP or an independent won, but that didn't stop the evening news giving them more coverage...

Clear bias against the greens from the evening news, very disappointing...

I agree, the Greens have councillors in Edinburgh, and they should be receiving as much attention as the other major parties who have elected members.

It was nice to see them highlight the Green councillors for being the ONLY party not to be wasting taxpayers' money on taxi fares across the city, but a bit of fairness on the campaign reporting would benefit the paper's reputation more than anything.

Good luck Kate! I'm sure you'll be a fantastic candidate - despite having to battle the political biases of the Evening News - and lord knows we could do with more Greens on the Council.
