A SENIOR Army commander based in Edinburgh has been appointed CBE for his work leading British troops in Afghanistan.
Brigadier Andrew Mackay, 51, received notification of his award in today's Operational Honours list. He commanded more than 7000 British and multi-national troops as the officer in charge of Task Force Helmand, from October 2007 until April 2008. He famously planned and oversaw the re-capture of the strategic town of Musa Qala, the last town in Helmand province to be held by the Taliban, last December.
Born in Elgin, the Brigadier started off his working life as a police officer in the Royal Hong Kong Police before graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and joining the King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1982.
