A MAN who was caught driving at twice the legal drink limit claims he only became tipsy after trying too many free samples at a Highland Show.
Peter McGhie, 41, said that he had been visiting the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh last month.
He told Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday that he had tried some of the free samples which had been taken to the show by some of Scotland's finest producers.
However the freebies soon added up and when police stopped him on Ingliston Road he was twice the legal limit to drive.
Fiscal depute Neil Allan told the court: "At 6.40pm police had their attention drawn to his car because of his driving."
Mr Allan said that after stopping McGhie, officers then performed a roadside breath test which showed him to be unfit to drive.
Sheriff Elizabeth Jarvie banned the Livingston man from driving for 15 months and fined him £300.
