AUTHOR Irvine Welsh has revealed his years spent living away from Edinburgh has given him a new perspective on the "cold, grey and dark" streets where he grew up.
The Edinburgh-born Trainspotting author, who now has homes in Dublin and London, chose to set his latest novel, Crime, in the streets around his third home in Miami. The novel features a detective who became disillusioned with Edinburgh and decided move to sunnier climbs.

Welsh said: "I quite enjoyed thinking about Edinburgh from Miami. I thought about it in a different way. The cold and the grey and the darkness bothered me a lot more than if I'd been there."

He revealed that he returns to the Capital at least once a month to watch Hibs and see old friends.
