STONE-THROWING youths have been accused of "mindless stupidity" after a bus driver was left temporarily blinded when glass from a window flew into his eyes.
The driver was left covered in glass when his bus was attacked as he drove through Newtongrange in Midlothian.

It was the second time in less than a week that a First bus has come under fire in the village. In

the earlier incident, a female passenger was injured when a window smashed.

First withdrew services in parts of Midlothian three years ago after a spate of attacks saw several buses hit by missiles, causing thousands of pounds in damage.

Today, the bus company said it would be working with police to track down those responsible.

The latest attack came on the number 86 service as it travelled along Suttieslea Road at about 9pm on Thursday night.

The driver was forced to make an emergency stop after glass particles hit him in the eyes. He is recovering at home after undergoing hospital treatment.

Six youths were seen running away from the scene and they are now being hunted by police.

Councillor Colin Beattie, whose ward covers Newtongrange, said: "Throwing stones or anything else at buses is mindless stupidity. The fact that there have only been two injuries, which seem to be relatively minor, is only down to good fortune; these incidents could have led to potential fatalities if a driver was struck. And I would say that a driver having glass in his eye is not minor, it's serious.

"We know that First has withdrawn services in the past because of such attacks. I would hope that the company will give police time to catch these mindless youngsters before taking any extreme action to withdraw routes."

The previous attack left a passenger with "minor injuries" after a window was smashed by a youth who threw a stone on Dalhousie Road at 7:30pm on 12 November.

A spokeswoman for First Bus said: "We can confirm that youths threw objects at our vehicles within the Newtongrange area on two different dates in the last week. The latest incident on 19 November resulted in one of our drivers being injured.

"The safety of our staff and passengers is our number one priority and we are working closely with the police."

From the latest attack, police released descriptions of a boy and girl spotted running away.

The boy is described as being in his teens, 5ft tall, with a red hat, a light jacket with the letter 'V' on the back and white trainers.

The girl, also in her teens, was wearing a red hat, along with a light jacket and dark trousers.

A police spokesman said: "This was a serious incident that had the potential to cause serious injury, and we are appealing for anyone who saw what happened to contact police.

"In October 2005, First Bus withdrew its new fleet of 15 double-deckers from the route after a number of buses had their windows smashed, mainly in an area of Dalkeith which became known as "ambush alley".

The parents of these little wasters must know what they are up to. If they are ever caught, the parents must be held to account for their offspring's behaviour.

Can see why first would withdraw, but why penalise the people who rely on the buses (like pensioners ) .Personally I think some plain clothes police shadowing the bus would be a better idea.

Unfortunately in this country we have a don't be a grass culture, if First & LB withdraw all services people would/might come forward with the names of the scum who did this. Remember this is not a one off.

The other problem is even if they are caught the punishment will not fit the crime, this should be treated as attempted murder, it's more likely it'll be treated as breach of the peace and a slap on the wrist followed by a social worker taking them to McDs for a year.

There will be people in these slums who know the brats responsible but they won't come forward, removing the bus services might lead to an arrest.

Come on, good citizens of Nitten. That is a reasonably good description, the time of the evening, the location are all known. Someone has an idea, next time this maniac might kill someone, it might be one of yours in Nitten. Help the polis with this.

Evidenced Based Thinking Please,

21/11/2009 18:01:52
Scotland has voted for this outcome for more tha 50 years. They have voted repeatedly for a political party which does not build more prisons, does not in any way wish be being "nasty" to criminals, but the Scots prefer to give themselves self-indulgent praise for their "compassion". Scotland votes year-in-year-out for soft options for criminals, Scotland supports releasing mass murderers, Scotland does not believe kids can just be plain bad. Please don't moan. Enjoy the consequences of your own choices.

AndyD,

When you pay idiots money to have kids this is what you get. In every village in Midlothian that I know of there are one - three families who have kids that cause 95% of the crime in the area while they roam the streets like feral animals.
The drugs problem in Midlothian is rife and the under 16's know they have this human rights nonsense that allows them to do anything to you but you touch one hair on their heads and you'll be fingerprinted, swabbed and on this fascist labour governments data base. Oh and you'll also get an asbo for your trouble . Labour and the snp have failed this counry.

Once upon a time, Scotland's greatest asset was its young people. As No.10 righty says, times have changed and youth crime is now Scotland's greatest problem.

Youth crime is a form of terrorism. Although it does not have any religious or political basis, it should be fought under the same heading as terrorism. More surveillance, more MI5 involvement, even if it comes amounts to having hidden microphones and cameras on every street.

Evidenced Based Thinking Please,

Drew,

Since when does any society, town, district, or city, not consider that children stoning a bus amounts to a demonstration that something is very seriously wrong? Whatsmore, should such a society not look to itself to stop it? It is not in appropriate to define a societal slum as somewhere the kids brick buses. That certain parent do not recognise this is precisely the challenge that we now face.

First should cease all services on routes where this activity occurs, until the community 'grasses up' the culprits - who should have to pay for their behaviour either out of their own or their parents' pockets. Personally, I'd shoot the little ba5tards on sight.

"he is running about Libya, full of life, partying every night for the last three months, and shows no signs of flagging." Do you have even the tiniest bit of evidence that this is true in any shape or form? Of course not, because it isn't.

#20 - more insults because I post my opinion. You should grow up and accept others have different opinions from you. Just because you support the yobbos bricking buses - the majority of the good public (like myself) do not. Now limped wristed liberal, I suggest you apologise to me, and the rest of the good people in Scotland. After all - it is your limped wristed policies that has lead to this dreadful situation.

#21 - when he left Scotland he only had two weeks to live. There were reports of him partying. If he is dead, don't you think it would be reported world wide? Three months later, no reports of his death, more reports of his champaign lifestyle, more reports of Libya sticking two fingers up to Scotland. What more evidence do you need? The SNP are soft on crime and criminals.

The stray dogs in Newtongrange probably have more manners! This is an outrage to the hard working and decent peopole who live in the area. What tragedy could lie ahead if the bust driver lost control, and mounted the paement and killed a pedestrian? A murder inquiry? I hope these kids get caught. In the words of Barnados Chief Executive about kids these days: "feral, a parasite, helping to infest our streets".

I hope you're on the wind up!

I can just picture the kids, instead of throwing rocks, taking pot shots at the group they didn't like on the bus, then running for cover when the bus driver and wee old granny in the disabled seat open up with their concealed Mac-10s. Then the police swarming the area, armed to the teeth and shooting any Brazilians they happen to see.

An armed civilian population will result in a society similar to the US or Brazil. Violent street shootings a way of life, entire towns no go areas for the police and rampant violent crime.

Quick. Someone get in touch with the SNP and get them to ban rocks and stones.

Clearly stones are dangerous and quite capable of causing severe injury. Scotland should ban stones now, even if England can keep them.
