STUDENTS at Edinburgh University have announced that they will refuse RBS advertising on campus during Freshers' Week until the bank changes its investment practices.
The decision was made at the Students' Representative Council (SRC) which also voted to call on the university to sell all of its shares in RBS.

The protest is being made as a result of anger over the bank's funding of the oil, coal and gas extrac
tion industry, which they say creates carbon emissions greater than the whole of Scotland.

RBS usually sets up a portable cabin in George Square during Freshers' Week and markets itself heavily as the primary student bank, encouraging Edinburgh University students to bank with it.

Following the vote, however, it will no longer be able to do this.

The SRC passed a policy at its AGM in 2008 which stated that RBS had until 2009 to clean up its act or the SRC would take further action.

The group has now said it will not accept advertising from RBS until it changes its investment practices with regards to fossil fuel investment.

Adam Ramsay, Edinburgh University Students' Association president, said: "We face a bleak future of climatic catastrophe. RBS are by far the UK's most irresponsible bank. We can't recommend to our students that they use a bank which is selling off their future."

Another generation of thick students being produced who cannot think for themselves. Presumably these same idiots will shun all electricity and gas. In fact, they should resort to using slates for writing on since destroying trees to make paper is obviously so environmentally unsound. Typical eco-hypocritical bar stewards.

Still, given the blood-letting the RBS has been involved with in the last few months, their 'carbon footprint' is the least of their worries.

One phrase jumps to mind....

GET A GRIP!!!!

Brainwashed with lies about carbon emmisions. I thought students were supposed to do proper research and develop conclusion, not by the looks of this report.

This actually could cost the RBS a fortune, once students have taken out a loan they rarely change banks and many of them go onto be high earns, the first bank that they sign up with has their business including, current accounts, loans, credit cards, insurance, mortgage, pension etc.

Spot on!
In my day it was Barclays who were the pariahs for their heavy involvement in South Africa, and to this day I have never had any dealings with them.

Students complain about carbon emission - they're having a laught aren't they? Have students ever worked out how much carbon is used to make all the pints of beer they seem to be able to afford to drink? And what about all the cooling needed to counteract all the hot air they generate.

Time students grew up and became adults.
