Pope reaches out to other faiths

POPE Benedict XVI, who is sometimes seen as insensitive to other faiths, will meet other religious leaders during his first visit to the United States.
The pontiff will meet with about 150 leaders of other religions on Thursday as he visits Washington, and he plans to visit a synagogue in New York on Friday.

If the Catholic church wants to reach out to other faiths it can start by welcoming all confirmed CHRISTIANS who wish to receive communion in its churches in Italy. Was in Florence at the weekend and as a confirmed Anglican, was not permitted to receive communion - only Catholics allowed! That is bigotry of the first order - I get really sick and tired of hearing about the various Christian faiths, we should all be accepted as Christian and we should accept taht there are Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhist, and so on.

Answer: Kate, the Roman Catholic Church does not offer Holy Communion but offers the Mass in its place.

As an Anglican you would not want to partake of the Mass which is not recognized by Christians as being the Lord's Supper sacrament.

The New King James version of the Bible states:

Hebrews 9-

"9:25 not that He [Christ] should offer Himself often, as the high priest [Jewish] enters the most Holy Place every year with blood of another-

"9:26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

"9:27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgement.

"9:28 So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many..."

Another section of Hebrews 10 states:

"10:10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

"10:11 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

"10:12 But this man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever sat down at the right hand of God...

"10:14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified."

So, as you can see, Kate, you did not miss Communion by not being admitted to the Mass in the Roman Catholic Church in Florence.

Did they not teach you the difference in the Anglican Church where you were confirmed?

It might help to explain further that the Roman Catholic Mass represents a human priest making repeated sacrifices of the the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ.

They believe that the symbolic bread and wine that is eaten is actually transformed by the priest into the actual body and blood of Christ...transubstantiation.

In other words, each time the Roman Catholic priest performs the Mass, he is supposedly once again resacrificing Christ.

The Bible clearly says that Christ sacrificed Himself ONCE for all.

The Reformation saw thousands of Protestants killed because they refused to accept the Mass in the place of the Lord's Supper.

This is not a difference in doctrine between Protestants and Roman Catholics that can ever be reconciled because they are direct opposites of belief.

Answer: The Pope might as well save his breath.

He is facing fierce opposition from SNAP...Survivors Network of Abusing Priests...that is after him for his part in moving sexually abusing priests to other positions giving them access to children.

SNAP is now after him for the abusing bishops that are still in place in the church.

Not only are great numbers of American Roman Catholics after him, but why would Protestants, Jews or Muslims want to talk with him?

The Pope is supposed to be the spiritual head of the Roman Catholic Church, but he insists that he is a head of state on par with the President of the United States.

He insults the American people by presuming to have the right "to chide" President Bush or to give his opinion about the Iraq War, capital punishment or any other American issue.

As the Head of State of Vatican City, it is as if the Mayor of Atlanta would presume to sweep into D.C. to tell the elected President of the United States how to run the nation.

The Constitution of the United States is based on separation of church and state, a concept that was put in place by the Protestant Founding Fathers after the long history of the secular and religious tyranny of the Roman Catholic Church.

No American that knows church and political history has forgotten the illegality of mixing church and state in the US.

If the Pope wants to visit "the faithful" then he should do it without the US government taking any official notice of it.

#4 Virginian....... You make some very good points. I am not an expert on the Bible but I think Christ said at the last supper"Take and eat all of you, for this is my body" he then took the cup and said,"take and drink for this is the cup of my blood which will be given up for you.do this in memory of me"I suppose the Catholic church takes those words as a fact, that Christ wanted this supper to be repeated to remember his sacrifice. The big problem is that we talk to a God who does not talk back to us in a human sense. There is no actual proof of life after death,only in faith do we believe in life after death.So! I feel that the divisions within the Christian churches are petty,and that we should be able to come to some arrangement leading to Christian unity.No single church has all of the truth, because in the case of religion,truth is based on faith,as their is no human proof of the existence of God

#5 " The Constitution of the united States is based on separation of church and state" I feel that the founding fathers of the USA reached their decision not because of any influence of the Catholic church but because of the behaviour of their former colonial masters . To this very day their exists in British law anti-Catholic legislation (the act of settlement 1701) No country wants this type of bigotry enshrined in their laws ,except Britain of course.

Virginian you are VERY MUCH MISTAKEN with regard to the Mass, it is not a re sacrifice of Christ, that is an anti Catholic misconception. The Mass is the Last Supper as explained by Jesus "Take the bread & eat it this is my body" Take the cup of Blessed wine & drink
"This is my Blood" All the Mass is is a remembrance of the sacrifice for the benefit of ALL Christians. We could never all be at the foot of the cross as John & his mother & the others were but when we attend mass it gives us the opportunity to be at the foot of the cross in OUR OWN AGE, how loving & caring of Christ to want to share that moment with ALL CHRISTIANS forever.
There are 24 hours in each day on our planet & somewhere in the world Mass is going on constantly, Christ is with us always as he said, "I am with you till the end of days." And Christ's directive to celebrate the Mass
"Do this in commemoration of Me"
