CHURCH of Scotland minister and former city council leader Ewan Aitken has accused the Pope of teaching death rather than love.
It follows Pope Benedict XVI's end-of-year address which provoked anger from gay campaigners, who interpreted him as arguing that "saving" humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as saving the rainforests.

The Pontiff ca
lled on the Church to protect man from the "destruction of himself" saying that tropical rainforests deserved protection but man as a creature "does not deserve any less".

In Councillor Aitken's blog, headed "The Pope teaches death not love", he said: "The Pope has crossed the line when he suggests that 'saving the world from homosexuality' is more important than saving the environment.

"There is nothing more important than saving the planet. The human race is in self-destruct mode but not over who we love and how we make love but how we are treating the planet without which there will be no place to make or be in love (or both)."

Cllr Aitken went on to say the Pope should spend "what moral authority he may have" calling people to consume less and care more about their carbon footprint than worrying yet again about who is sleeping with whom.

And he concluded: "I believe that God made the world and it is sacred and should be treated as such. I also believe that God gave us the power to love another and we should celebrate human love in all its forms not decry a minority for their love for each other whilst all around the world in dying."

Death cant be taught, Its a stupid headline, and a stupid accusation from Mr Aitken, and why is saving the planet so important ? we cant save it, its decline and eventual destruction as we know it is inevitable, I doubt we can even slow this down a fraction but Im sure we cant stop it.

Not showing much love for the Pope is he ? Licentiousness , including homosexuality , needs to be exposed and curtailed as a pre requisite for a healthy society . Whether or not the Pope represents that healthy society is doubtful . But in so far as the message , in this particular case , homosexuality , needs to be told at least he can be thanked for that . Clearly the rotten politicians fear to .

I would much prefer the Pope to speak out against the arms manufacturers and the soul less men who sell them out of choice i.e. choosing to make money at any cost rather than condemning homosexuality which I thought was now universally accepted as being a natural part of life's rich diversity, in this case in the field of sexuality over which people have as much choice as those born left handed..

Why do so many religious people and organisations get so worked up about sex? If they put half as much energy into worrying about poverty, murder and starvation as they do about worrying about who's sleeping with who, the world would be a much happier place. And why so many religious people and organisations concentrate on the "you all must be punished" bits rather than the "be nice to people and remember everyone's a sinner" (a lesser known Hot Chocolate hit?) bits?

I am no fan of His Holiness, former Cooncil Leader Aitken ... he's politician before he's a churchman. So yes it IS a bit rich the noise coming from him. Pots and kettles spring to mind. Frankly, I've no time for him, Herr Pope or ANY religion.

And Herr Pope's message seems to be, "Kill a poof and save a tree!"

I'm sure if any gods did exist, they would say nothing of the kind!

What we have is discrimination, race-hate, sexism, bullying and political bulls hit masquerading as a fake god's religion.

The world would be a better place without religion. The Pope, like most Imans and Rabbi's exist only to indoctrinate their respective masses with as much religious polution as they can muster.
Fasting, praise, worship, confession, submission to an invisible entity that created itself and now lives in the void -
I believe that when I die, I am done with, game over end of story, and I am comfortable with that. I feel no need to invent a fantasy world that will offer yet more life when this one is done and that is my right. It is also the right for those who believe in god to do so, but they should be able to do so without a governing body. All ministers, Popes, Priests and Evangelists exist for commercial reasons and commercial reasons only, god is merely their product, their item of personal gain.
Imans and Rabbi's probably exist for more religious reasons, but they hardly have a choice such is the intense indoctrination they must endure.

#30 well said! Ignore everything and do make any sort of decision.
Then when it all goes wrong you can at least say "well don't blame me because I had nothing to do with it".

Homosexuality is not normal! It has become tolerated but I would not say accepted and thankfully it is not compulsory. (at the time of writing)
Oh, I have done it now. I have spoken out against homosexuals. At least elayne will not judge me lest she be judged.

#32 - no, homosexuality is not normal, because it is not the sexuality of most people. Most people are not homosexual. Similarly, red hair is not normal. Being born with one leg is not normal. Being 7ft tall is not normal. Having eyes of different colours is not normal.

But just like all of those things, homosexuality is perfectly natural. It's not wrong, it's not shameful, it's not perverted - it's just the way some people are. And even if it was something wrong is it the most important thing in the world for the church to be worrying about?

Charles Darwin could well have agree with the Pope, having studied Medicine in Edinburgh and Theology at Cambridge. but might have had to redraft his book "Origin of Species" in the case of Mr Aitkins.
Mr A: NEWS FLASH; No Man, No Woman = No Children, Result No Future for homosapiens. What was that about preaching Death?? Unless he has found a way to remove the first two component from the process the result is the same. I am not aware of an alternative but would very willing to learn. ( SBanks,IV's, surrogated etc are only variations on the orginal) Maybe the Grand Old Deluder (GOD) had a sense of humour after all.

#37 do you know some people think child abuse is natural?
I also understand that some countries believe in arranged marriages?
So as long as a minority consider it normal then we must go along with it?
I also see that you mention things in your agrument which a person has no control over, that is born with.
Now if what you say is true then why do some gays speak in such an affected way. They are not born that way which makes me question there life choice.
Oh no I have done it again!

I do ot agree with the pope , but his holiness Aitken preaching from the pulpit just makes me sick.

This man presided over a council that was notorious for back handers, fraud, waste. He is a member and supporter of a regime that partakes in the slaughter of women and Children for "oil security", a regime that has sytematically removed the people of this countries rights of free speech, assemby and protest and he moralises about the pope.

Straight jacket for aitken.

SOME of you people are truly pathetic,
for me the worst is the Rangers/Brit Nat Orange-men, what abuch of Himmler's and your side-kick Brown,
that being said that old ex- hitler youth Pope, well does any serious citizen of the 21st century even listen, with a religion possessing such a horrific past desperately trying to hide itself.
Then again maybe Atkins is just another agent of Bilderberg making an attack upon the old order.
Well old order or new it presents a dismal picture for all of us ordinary folks

glassbenmhor,

I kissed a boy and didn't like it!
My wife kissed a girl and I Bloody well liked it!

You see, we have to watch how we treat the subject with honesty, I have no problem with Homosexuality ,until it is thrust down my throat at home at work etc.
So for me you can take the likes of Peter Tatchell lock him up and through the key away for public abuse of heterosexuals.
