Velicka: Blame me for Rangers catastrophe

EX-HEARTS striker Andrius Velicka branded Rangers' defeat by his former club FBK Kaunas as the worst night of his career – and insisted he had to shoulder some of the blame for their dramatic exit from Europe last night.
Walter Smith's men were expected to progress to a Champions League third-round qualifier – likely to be against Danish side Aalborg – despite a goalless first leg at Ibrox last week.

Kevin Thomson opened the scoring in the first half in Lithuania,
before Nerijus Radzius levelled for the hosts.

Just when Rangers thought they were set to go through on the away goals rule, they were hit with a sucker punch when another former Jambo, Linas Pilibaitis, snatched the winner with only three minutes to go.

Velicka had earlier come off the bench and squandered a great opportunity to kill the tie off when the game was all square at 1-1, and he admitted afterwards: "I cannot sum up how I feel.

"Maybe it was my fault because of the chance I had, you have to score those chances. I cannot think of a worse night – it's a catastrophe."

Some fans will vent their anger at boss Smith but Nacho Novo insists the players must hold their hands up and admit they simply were not good enough.

He said: "It's disappointing and the players feel very bad right now. We've not done enough and if there's a problem, it's with the players.

"It's easy to blame the manager or other things but the players need to do a little more.

"It's definitely the worst night of my career and it's so disappointing.

"We need to do more and we need to change everything and try to go for the win. You need a goal to win games."

Rangers participated in a staggering 19 continental outings last season, but must now deal with the disappointment of no further European action this season.

Novo added: "We played so many games last year, around 65, it's just four weeks or so break. There have been a lot of games.

"We need to win everything now. We definitely need to go for it and everything starts on Saturday and we just need to put in a better performance than this."

Trying Times for all Bears.
Would have been acceptable had Gow, Fleck, Furman, Shinnie, Lowing or Lennon been given a chance to see what they could do in midfield or in the case of lowing an attacking full back.
Good thing for me, as a gers fan, is that now we have no guaranteed cash, WE MUST BRING ON THE BOYS NAMED ABOVE< its about time we started to use Auchenihowie to DEVELOP players, not free them to Motherwell/Falkirk etc for them to then sell on to championship clubs and make quite good cash for them!

Agent Velicka, return to base.

Who?,

Velicka does score goals, however like last night showed he can also miss quite a few too.

I've met Walter Smith a few times and he is a genuinely nice guy, however his record in european competitions is appauling. In his first stint at rangers he squandered millions with no return on the continent. I still can not fathom how a team with 7+ strikers can start with 1 up front against cow-nass?

As for kenny miller... how can he be a pro footballer? He is the signing and the striking choice that has caused this humilliation. Ok he runs around and gives effort but he has no guile, or idea, his only tactic is to hit the ball as hard as he can towards goal. Great strikers weigh up the options enabling them to score from different angles and positions. The guy just doesn't cut it.

Out of Europe before the SPL starts, before the Olympics start, before Big Brother finishes, and most importantly, before Queen of the South. Oh my sides....

I can live with an early season disaster which can happen to anyone ( before the usual lot have a go just remember Artmedia).
What I am thoroughly ashamed off is that we tried to play a defensive formation to hold out for a draw against little more than a pub team.
Walter must realise that while it is acceptable to do that sort of thing away to Barcelona it is most definitely not against Kaunas.
As for bit T (short for tw@t I suppose) remember should your lot ever get to Europe then unless you want to start in June you should be hoping any Scottish team gets a decent result to build up some points.

Really don't care - I just love to see any team beat your lot (and your Ugly Sister) any time, any where!

And since when did the Bigot Brothers care about any other Scottish team? Your lot would jettison Scottish football in a nano-second - the problem is NOBODY wants you! Just ask Manchester!!

I was astonished last night when Hemdani was not named in the starting line up. He was the main reason (imho) why Wattenaccio worked last season in Europe. An unsung hero for Rangers in my book with regards his performances in Europe for Rangers last year. The fact that he wasn´t named is surely an indication of an impending fire sale at Ibrox. I can understand holding back Cuellar ..but Hemdani ??? is he a big earner?

"Velicka had earlier come off the bench"
Can someone enlighten me; what's the difference between "come off the bench", and "climb off the bench"?

awol,

Tim alloy, you thought about that one! 06/08/2008 22:00:14
I can't help thinking that rangers can now "concentrate" on the league, I still think that is the priority for the rangers this season. I would hesitate to say "agve away" maybe I'm paranoid, but Celtic want european succes while guilding the lily with another title, rangers on the other hand want the league pure and simple.
My problem with this is simple, rangers are absolute muck. OK they might scramble an old firm win, maybe, if Celtic have about 6 core players out with beubonic plague, and will doubtless trot over many teams at ibrox, but overall they will quite simply drop crucial points against teams away, I suggest Motherwell, Aberdeen, ICT, Falkirk, and I think Hamilton may do them too!
Anyway 4 leagues on the bounce is never a certainty, but how often do the bookies get it wrong?
THe only scenario possibly stopping this is a run to a latter stages in europe, not becasue of too mnay games, rather just taking eye off the ball in terms of the league. Another season awaits, roll on Saturday, Ifor one am loving this.
