Smith: SPL not at the root of our defeat

WALTER SMITH refused to blame the Scottish Premier League for Rangers' failure to win the UEFA Cup at the last hurdle.
Rangers went down 2-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium to Zenit St Petersburg and, afterwards, Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar pointed the finger at the SPL's refusal to postpone last Saturday's match with Dundee United.

But Smith said: "I don't
think the thing with the SPL had an effect on the game. We would have liked to have cleared our heads a little bit but it didn't have an influence on the players, they were ready to play.

"We don't have any winter breaks in Britain, that was our 64th game this season, we have four more left so when you add that a lot of the players play at international level it's a lot of games but that's what the players have to do and it didn't affect the result."

That was not Cuellar's view however after Igor Denisov and Konstatin Zyryanov secured a deserved victory for the Russian side.

Cuellar said: "All we needed was the SPL to help us make history by extending the season by one week only but I don't know why they didn't want to help us win this trophy. We have had too many games in such a short space of time and it is crazy. We had a very good chance to win a European trophy but the SPL did not want to help us.

"I don't understand why that was and if we had not played Dundee United on Saturday, I think we would have looked more comfortable.

"This season, I think I have played 62 games and in Spain, I would maybe play 38 or 40 times in a year."

Smith said it was important the disappointment did not overshadow the remaining chase for the league and Scottish Cup double, having already won the CIS Insurance Cup.

He added: "It's difficult to judge just how much the disappointment takes out of us but we have our opportunity with four games to go on and win two trophies, so we would hope we can overcome the disappointment and not let it affect us.

"If we win our next three games we will be champions and we would be happy with that!"

Smith admitted that Rangers were short of the sort of creativity that man of the match Andrei Arshavin provided for Zenit.

"I think when you look at the player who has just been man of the match we have missed a little bit of that all year, someone who can add something a little different."

Sorry Carlos, you played well, but the game against Dundee Utd was not to blame for the defeat. You got 'megged' by a proper good player on his game and that sealed it.

The H-uns got exactly what they deserved. No biased referee to help out eh??

Plus that cheating PhannyFerguson got back to Neanderthal basics by fouling his way through the game.

Got exactly what you deserved.

Celic and ra Gers will always play a lot of games as they are usually in our cups until the semis/finals and then add on europe. The SPL with its split is a joke and we should be looking to get 4 or 5 first division teams in to have a 16 or 17 team league. If we only played Rangers and Celtic twice a season we would all have a better chance of challenging for the top 2 spots. It won't happen as Motherwell etc have built stands that are only filled by away fans such as the O/F.

So according to Carlos it's all the fault of the SPL!

Is this the same SPL that Rangers would jettison in a nano-second in favour of the English Premiership??

By the way the disgraceful scenes in Manchester just confirms why England do not want these mindless thugs - unfortunately we're stuck with them!!

Ha Ha Ha, of course it wasnt the SPL to Blame. It was your "lets play to not concede" rather than "lets play to score" policy that shot you in the foot ya backstabber.

Rangers never deserved to get anything from that match. They set out not to loose it and apart from a glimmer of a chance just after half time never posed a threat until after Zenit went 1-0 up. If I was a follower of the manky mob and paid good money to go to the final and my team desperately defended on the hope of getting to penalties again I would be a tad miffed.

But then again I dont really care and I am only typing this because I am bored.

Just think how glorious it could have been last night had Mike McCurry been the ref with Andy Davis running the line!

After Ragz fanz humiliating Rearrangers F.C. in front of a Europe-wide audience yesterday and caught on multiple world-wide TV networks, they would probably have been better off not qualifying for that final.

Take Sir Wantaway, what chance now of him completing his two year long mission of getting shot of Rangers Football Club.

Rearrangers fanz display last night has cost their club untold millions in lost revenue.

Sad.
Isn`t it.
