Hearts travelling to Ibrox with the intention of claiming all three points, says Wallace

CSABA LASZLO'S transformation of Hearts is illustrated by the build-up to tomorrow's visit to Ibrox. For once, headlines of "turmoil" refer to the opposition, with Rangers looking ready to spontaneously combust at any moment.
A European humbling at the hands of FBK Kaunas – little more than a Tynecastle feeder club – and the £7.8million sale of Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa have brought supporters in Govan to boiling point. Losing Glenn Loovens to Celtic is unlikely to e
ase the pain.

Even three points tomorrow are unlikely to placate those used to monopolising Scottish football and who believed their club earned a divine place amongst Europe's elite with last May's UEFA Cup final appearance.

Reality having bitten, Rangers must now confront a buoyant Hearts. More than that, a stable Hearts for the first time in recent years. Visiting players could step off the team coach smoking cigars given the confidence instilled in them by Laszlo, although the disciplined Hungarian would abhor such a mellow attitude entering one of Scotland's footballing cauldrons.

Last week's absorbing 3-2 defeat of Motherwell took place shortly after Andrius Velicka, the former Hearts forward, secured an unconvincing 1-0 victory for Walter Smith's side at Falkirk. With Celtic stuttering to an equally wobbly triumph over St Mirren the following day, the Old Firm are currently more vulnerable than ever and match officials can surely only save them for so long.

That both Glasgow clubs look about as steady as a Labour constituency seat is one thing, but it's down to Hearts and other SPL clubs to rise to the challenge and prove this isn't merely early- season ring-rustiness. Coupled with Laszlo's personal charisma and flamboyance is a steely determination to succeed, based on organisation and discipline. Therefore, his players should take to the Ibrox pitch tomorrow brimming with belief rather than crippled by nerves and disorder, as has happened previously.

"That has been the case for us before, even at Tynecastle," admitted Lee Wallace, the Hearts defender. "This time, we're off to a good start, the manager's come in and team spirit and everything has come together. We're going there as the more stable team."

Any commotion amongst the locals will, naturally, only conspire to help the visitors. Wallace continued: "Everyone's talking about Rangers just now since they went out of Europe and lost Cuellar. It might have affected them all mentally. Last week, they weren't at their best against Falkirk so I'd say it's a good time to play them. There is a lot of confidence at our place in and around the dressing-room and out at training. We'll go there and give it a right go, try to win the game.

"The manager has been speaking all week about this game and his emphasis is on going to win it. Without being overconfident, the aim is to get three points. When we get the ball we'll be passing it and playing encouraging football, that's what we've been working on in training. It will be a case of taking the game to Rangers, being positive and trying to attack."

Contrast Wallace's outlook today with events last time Hearts visited Ibrox. Velicka had equalised Lee McCulloch's opening goal and the Edinburgh club, under the tutelage of Stephen Frail, were three minutes from a precious draw when Eduardas Kurskis contrived to allow a straightforward catch to squirm from his grasp and into the net.

One vivid recollection was of Frail slapping the dugout in frustration at a goalkeeper who was never worthy of a Hearts jersey.

"I was on the bench that day," recalled Wallace. "We were doing okay if I remember correctly but when I saw the ball going in I knew everything had changed. The confidence, not just for Eddy but the whole squad, just dropped. It was a really hard game for Eddy personally but I think the whole team morale took a dent that day. "We were all unhappy with what happened, it was hard for everyone to take but, at training the next week, we tried to forget about it." Another six matches passed before the team began to recover, that 2-1 defeat last December arriving in the middle of a ten-game winless streak.

Laszlo possesses an infectious sense of self-assurance which has quickly filtered through to the players since his appointment last month. "Last weekend was a great victory," said Wallace. "Obviously, in the first game of the season, we wanted to show something for the fans and more importantly the manager. It was his first competitive game and it worked out a good week for us. With a good start, we can take confidence into tomorrow."

With Barry Ferguson absent for Rangers – his replacement, Christian Dailly, is hardly an equivalent threat – it is Velicka who represents the biggest danger to Hearts. The Lithuanian plundered 26 goals in two seasons at Tynecastle, many of them on the big occasion at venues like Parkhead, Easter Road and, of course, Ibrox.

"He was a big player for us, the amount of goals he scored were hugely important," said Wallace. "That was his job and I'm sure it won't be any different at Rangers. He showed on numerous occasions when he was here how good he was at finishing. It will be difficult for our back four coming up against him but, if he plays, our centre-halves are more than able to compete. He's often in the right place at the right time but, if we concentrate and are alert at the back then I'm sure it'll be no problem."

With Laszlo's attention to detail, the Hearts defenders will be fully briefed on how to combat Velicka. "The thing about the manager is he'll get the starting line-up before a game and go through every aspect of what's required thoroughly. I think his work is paying off because we've taken what he has shown us in training into matches.

"Having played most of pre-season and only missing a couple of games, it's a huge confidence boost for me to be playing left-back regularly. I'm learning more under the new manager in terms of shape and how to play my position. It's been the same for me ever since I came into the team way back under John Robertson: as soon as I get an opportunity I've just got to take it."

Wallace knows there is no better opportunity to get one over Rangers than tomorrow.

"Do I not like this" to quote a former England manager, remember its the same set of players as last season and this could easily be a false dawn, we're just stoking up the fire I fear, I wish players would just shut up sometimes and not fire up the opposition, I personally couldn't think of a worse time to be playing Rangers to be honest. I hope to be proved wrong of course

Facing the Blues noses, bears and men in Black all on one side will be tough, so hope the Jambo's take it too them and dont give the men in Black an easy option to gift the Blue noses 3 points.

#1 couldn't agree more - although there were a lot of positives last Saturday too early to make predictions. Everyone knows what is happening at Ibrox but better to do the talking on the pitch.

Although impressed with the transformation since Csaba arrived, I agree with you #1 in that we're now hearing a little too much from the players in the media now. Every day there is a story about how good we are now compared with before which is nice to know but I prefer to see more action on the pitch before we get too carried away. One thing we should not be doing is talking about another teams problems (however revolting they may be) because we are not out the woods yet ourselves. They might be poor but they are still the favourites...lets do our talking on the pitch rather than in the papers

#1 & 4, I'm with you, going in there talking nonsense is only likely to rebound, one win over Motherwell does not make us title contenders or likely to scare the OF on their own patch.
Better idea of where Hearts are going around Christmas not after 1 game.

There's nothing like setting yourselves up for a fall, and all the noise coming out of Tynie just now is doing that, would it not be better to think like this but not to mouth off to the media about what you are going to do.
Only one game has been played so far and whilst it was a good win to listen to some of the comments being made it's as if Hearts have signed a completely new squad of players and are going to be the only challengers to Celtic this year.
Too many are desparate to believe that yet again they are getting carried away with themselves about how good their team actually is

I like you guys hate the way this paper over hypes every players interview before an OF game... it is almost like they are looking to set the team up for a big fall.

We had a good solid winning start to the season last weekend and we should take heart from that. The team however were far from their best and the goals we shipped showed how exposed we are down the right wing and how we can still lose concentration during the game.

Our team still has no natural goal scorer and nobody to lead the line, even against an old rangers defence we will struggle to make oppertunities and again will rely on Driver, Kingston and Stewart to create the goals.

Forget last week... the game at ibrox is by far a true measure of the team under Csaba... and we still do not have a team made up of 'first choice' players... all we have is the 'feel good' factor the new manager has created.

I am confident of a good team performance more than ever since last season... but that is about it.

Good to see Wallace talking up hearts chances, however i do feel that the brain should be engaged before answering any journo's questions- best not to wind up the rioters. After all the Axis of Evil will be inforce tomorrow.

Regarding the rioters i do feel that their so called fans have been extremley OTT! Cuellar is a good player but it was steve davis who ran the show for rangers in the second half of last season. Basketball Barry looked increasingly past it as the season went on (relying on the gfa refs "goodwill" to avoid being booked) while thomson played closer to the central defenders than the lone forward- alot of times his positioning looked like a third central defender.

I get the feeling that if the hatchet man Bain and the unfortunate Smith had signed up Davis for £4m (which looked a snip) instead of leaving Davis in limbo and annoying fulham AND paying £6.5m for 3 strikers they would be heading towards the CL group stages and the crissis headlines would have never been.

Johnny Jambo,

I agree with those who say we should do our talking on the pitch. However Motherwell are a far cry from Rangers and as has been said before we don't have a great deal more quality than last season so we need to be careful. I like what I see so far but lest wait until we have a few wins under the belt before going public with how good we "think" we are.
16

Indigo Nightlight,

15/08/2008 13:18:35
To be honest, I don't think you could take anything Wallace has said as over confidence. He's basically said we're going there to try and win the game, nothing cocky in his interview.

That's the attitude we should exhibit every time we go to Ibrox or Celtic Park.
17

Lauder Lad,

15/08/2008 13:35:06
I feel tomorrow will be a big test not so much in terms of ability but more about mentality. The number of times you go through there and straight away you can tell from the team's body language/performance that keeping the score down is about the best your going to achieve. Hopefully Csaba's influence can change this mentality and make us stronger when we go through to Glasgow - do that and the results will come.
18

Addie,

15/08/2008 13:47:09
Im not a fan of the Old Firm and couldnt be more happy with 3 points against Rangers - but the players need to give them a bit of respect as they seem to think this will be a stroll. Hearts are far too overconfident and there will be a Rangers backlash at some point.

"Visiting players could step off the team coach smoking cigars given the confidence instilled in them by Laszlo, "

I think last time Hearts were at Ibrox your keeper was smoking something a bit stronger than that Barry!!!

Seriously, I think tomorrow will be a cracking game and I can't wait! Could go either way as Hearts are stronger in the middle of the park but we're stronger upfront(unless it's Kenny Miller on his own!). Not going to get involved in any predictable slagging matches as I have a lot of time for the Jambos as I've met a few good mates since I moved through here who support them.

Csaba: Kello was my choice

15.08.2008

Csaba Laszlo this afternoon shrugged off the 'nay-sayers' who have claimed that new goalkeeper Marian Kello has been foisted upon Hearts.
The manager revealed that he is happy to have signed the 25-year-old Slovakian stopper from FBK Kaunas, and that he has one other possible target in Jose Couceiro's Lithuanian league winners squad, although he refused to name him.
"This is a Slovakian guy and I saw him against Rangers and he was a former goalkeeper with Kaunas," the manager told today's pre-match news conference. "He is a very talented goalkeeper.
"Before the questions comes about Mr Romanov I will tell you something. I was the person who decided that if the time was there when Kaunas did not have any chance in the Champions League or UEFA Cup that I needed this guy here.
"We need goalkeepers here. This was a decision between me and Mr Romaonv. I saw the Rangers game. I had a lot of information. We needed quality and this is a good guy.
"I saw this goalkeeper in the training camp in Germany when he played two games [for Kaunas]. He convinced me. I think that the best possibility is to know that we look for quality. The owner also wants quality. We don't do too many transfers.
"I have one other candidate [from Kaunas] who could be a quality player in the future. I don't like to talk about this player's name."
Csaba also revealed that he won't rule out the possibility of signing Janos Balogh, although the Hungarian has now returned to Budapest for the time being.
"The Hungarian goalkeeper is very talented, but it is not a decision between me, the goalkeeper and the club," he said.
"At the moment he told me he would fly back. We made an offer. He told me he wants to think about this. You cannot force someone to come here. Next week we can come back to this question."
Meanwhile Gary Glen IS fit for this weekend's trip to Rangers after a calf problem. The striker was able to participate in training this morning an

His articles are always hilarious! He's the main reason I read the EEN sport section. Totally unprofessional journalism, on a par with a Sports reporter for a Junior club in a small-town provincial local rag, but still very funny. Not sure if he means to be though. Would be refreshing to have some of the national paper's journalists being a bit more honest and reporting in this way!

That said, the Hibs reporter is pretty amusing too! Especially his overuse of the word "star"
27

Braes of Glenmiller,

The Quivering depths of hope 15/08/2008 16:36:42
Clearly "Shabba" has got to the EEN as well as the players. I've never read Banderson being so positive about the Jam Tarts.

We might lose tomorrow, it's a difficult away game, but it seems like the rot has stopped for now and we can look forward to a competitive side being on the park again.

I'm working tomorrow so I'll miss the radio commentary but go for it JT's and stuff them. There would be nothing better than to come home to a set of Rioters disaster/crisis headlines in the Scottish press.

That boy Phelps at the Olympics, he doesn't deal in maybe and possibly, he just looks at winning so maybe Mr Lazlo has the right idea.

If more teams went to Greyskull and Darkheid without fear then there may be more results against the fading giants. I recently read an article about Clyde FC who were enormous in Glasgow until both wars cruelly robbed them of impetus and left them as strugglers. It can be done, it has been done, and maybe, just maybe this time we can start a quiet revolution in Scottish football that will benefit Hibs, Dundee Utd, and Aberdeen as we see the declining years of the OF teams.

Every empire crumbles, and maybe this is the time to do it.

BTW, nothing on the goalie in the papers?????????

Hearts website had it up last night. Was expecting the usual suspects to be sniping about Vlad and Kaunas ad nauseam again.

Forget together, forget hope. Remember tomorrow is a big game for Scottish football in general.
