Published Date: 06 August 2008
RANGERS fans have called for leadership from the top at Ibrox following the Glasgow club's exit from Europe at the hands of FBK Kaunas.
Last season's UEFA Cup finalists were beaten 2-1 in Lithuania last night following a 0-0 draw at Ibrox in the Champions League second qualifying round.

Rangers Supporters' Trust spokesman David Edgar said: "Let's not sugar-coat it, this was a disa
ster of a result. The fans are more upset than I can remember. The feel-good factor from Manchester (UEFA Cup final) has totally and utterly gone. It's hard to see where we go from here and it's down to the people in charge to show us.

"The fear is that players will be sold to balance the books and the fans simply will not stand for it. We are totally gutted."

Rangers Supporters Assembly president Jim Templeton labelled the side "a disgrace" after their European aspirations were ended before the Clydesdale Bank Premier League season has started.

Templeton said Rangers owner Sir David Murray, boss Walter Smith and chief executive Martin Bain will face a pre-arranged question-and-answer session at the club's training complex, Murray Park, on Friday.

He said: "You could call it a disaster but you could also say that the second-half display was a disgrace. They looked clueless. The loss of money from going out of Europe is one thing but fans want to see what is on the park and the evidence of what we have seen tonight, there wasn't much."

Scotlands Shame out of Europe :-). Not as good as all the journalists on Radio Scotland (Chick Young will be suicidal today) make them out to be and I have no doubt whatsoever that an inquest will be held in the Daily Record for the next 8 or 9 weeks to how this could have possibly happened.

Typical gers performance in Europe - only difference between last night's game and all the games in their UEFA cup run last year was that they didn't have Cuellar to get them out of trouble.

Perhaps now the press will stop going on about Rangers fans not liking Kenny Miller because he crossed from Celtic. That is just too easy a storey to use. The real reason is HE IS HOPELESS as has been witnessed in the two CL games he has played in. Why spend over £2M on a striker who has a score rate ( in league games) of 0.28!! Why also when playing with a lone striker does Walter leave JCD, who got us to the EUFA finals in that position, on the bench and give Miller the whole game to prove he was hopeless!! Why play Daily when we have an experienced defensive midfielder, who also got us to the final, left on the bench. The manager must stand or fall by his team choice, and fall looks like his option at the moment.

ok, let me just recap EVERYTHING i said before manchester last year, i have seen this coming since walter came back, ive been so negative about his tactics, his signings and also his pals he keeps playing in the team, i was slaughtered on here for speaking my mind as a staunch rangers fan, i thought we were rotten, i thought walter didnt have a clue, i thought the standard of player at ibrox was appaulling, i though ally and kenny were clueless(tactically and managerially), i thought SDM was keeping millions from us, i thought Barry was unfit and selfish last year, i thought Dailly, McCulloch and Adam were imposters, total jokes, never football players, i thought weir was a too old and slow at 39, i thought darcheville wasnt a striker, i thought cousin was a trouble maker and a lazy so n so, but i didnt really think these things, i have KNOWN all this for over a year now, ive been telling friends and family how poor it is, but no-one would listen, everyone wanted to give the bears a chance, i knew we were rotten ive said it so many times, the people(not footballers) walter has signed are not good enough to win the SPL never mind competing in Europe, its time we examined what hes spent...and then ask is he doing better than Le Guen, personnally i think its worse, at least le guen tried to play football. Bears where are ye all??? Ive been telling the club this too for over a year but we all know they dont read fans emails, they make them up for "have your say" on club website. If they had printed what i was saying maybe more people would have listened and we could have acted before we were humiliated by inverness, dundee utd, aberdeen, celt*c, hibs, hearts, motherwell, q.o.s., st johnstone, partick thistle...its shocking, we cannot underestimate how bad it is.

#7 spot on, the anti football must be driven out of the club, guys like adam, mcculloch and dailly cant string 2 passes together, strikers like darche and miller who cant score goals....if i was a youngster i would be chapping the managers door and TELLING him the first team are rotten i want a game.it is embarrassing.

*McGregor- just signed a new deal, not match fit, making too many mistakes.
*Whittaker-struggled at RB, hes a RM, no positional sense.
*Papac-i like papac, he was 1 of only 1 player who tried!
*Weir-was finsihed last year, a joke he got a new deal, too slow, cant pass.
*Broadfoot-a scapegoat, i like him too, won many headers but cant pass, still young.
*Dailly-an imposter, not a football player, shouldnt be there, cant pass, cant tackle, cant run, no movement.
*McCulloch-again an imposter, over rated rubbish, cant run, cant pass, cant shoot straight, no movement.
*Adam-another imposter, cant run, cant shoot, cant pass, cant move.
*Novo-great heart but not good enough, cant shoot, cant finish, no composure, just a hurried wreck.
*Thomson-feel so sorry for him playing in that midfield, although he thinks hes beckenbauer, he is doing the work of 5 midfielders, unlucky son.
*Miller-just NOT GOOD ENOUGH, and he failed at Celt*c(i wont hide from it), cant control a ball, cant finish, cant shoot, a hurried wreck.

There ye go, our team last night, it like playing with 5 men v 11, honestly Walter, get the finger out and pay these guys off, i dont care if we have to play the younger boys, they have more heart, pace and determination.Last word Dailly couldnt control the ball at the end that led to the corner where they scored the second goal.Schoolboy error, not good enough.

Didn't want Smith back as I remember his efforts in Europe before. Hopeless. He's spent over £20 million on a collection of people who can't do the basics of the game but they are all hard workers. Only Cuellar is exempt out of Smiths buys and he was recommended to us.

Smith has to go, Murray has to follow and if he's pricing potential buyers out of bidding with his valuation of the club then he has to get real. This club is currently not worth anything like he hopes it is. With the way the world is right now no one is going to speculate on a Scottish club where there's very little money to be made.

FFS if I was a billionaire I wouldn't spend a good whack of it on either OF club.

Chazbud, whether disappointed or not we have to stick behind the team.
Im not happy at the tactics either but we cannot desert our team because of a few bad results.
We have to push them on to the title like the other lot did three years ago.

#33 thats funny, but no, its ok when yer champions, but not when you are so bad at yer job.

#34 are you a celt*c fan? get behind what? that isnt a team, its a disgrace.its not a few bad results, its been going on for months and months, the title is not going to happen, im more worried about dundee utd and motherwell who have 2 managers who have the beating of Walter tactically, and the Kaunas first team from Edinburgh, its worrying times, and its because of fans like you, "get behind them" "its not that bad" "itll be ok" "we will win the league" fans in denial, we have to be honest here, the standard of football player in our first team squad is shocking, i said weeks ago our under 19's play better fooball, look fitter and CAN string 2 passes together, i wasnt joking!

Chazbud,
part of the problem I feel Rangers face now, is that they may have to depend on one of two things to get back on a level playing field with Celtic;

1. A huge investment from Murray or A.N. Other
2. A dramatic slump from the champions to below Rangers' level to allow you back into the CL next year as league winners.

Neither are likely and I'll tell why the latter is the more unlikely scenario of the two: Peter Lawell. The man has both Celtic and Rangers right where he wants them. If in December/Jan, it appears that there is even the remotest possibility of that title heading west towards Ibrox, he'll invest enough to ensure it does not happen.

You are facing 4 in a row. If that happens it makes 5-6-7 all the more likely unless as I say, someone comes in with heavy investment.

Personally, I admire WGS's achievements as Celtic boss, but feel he should have made more of the transfer money, but he has survived some poor signings, took responsibility for his bad signings by making it clear they are now surplus to requirements, and coaxed and cajoled his squad(s) to 3 in a row.

He has now put distance in quality between the 2 Glasgow teams and should make it 4. I would like to see a new manager come in at the end of next season, with fresh enthusiasm and continue the charge towards 10. I believe it can happen.

(And for all the WGS enthusiasts, don't mistake my desire to change the manager at the end of the season as a dig at wee Gordy. I think he'll go down as a hugely successful manager in our history books, but someone of the ilk of a David Moyes/Steve Coppell/Mark Hughes would bring a new momentum and carry on Gordy's good work)

#37 well said for a tim, all true, Liewell has had the beating of us since O'Neill came to Parkheed. Its not good enough, funnily enough i think only 4 or 5 clever signings could catch you lot, but i also think getting rid of the players i mentioned before would enhance that squad not weaken it, thats more important, but you are right at the moment we dont look like stopping ye, i think the midfield battle in August at CP even if we still sign davis who i dont want, you have mcculloch, dailly, tommo, novo/davis and adam vs nakamura, mcgready, brown, hartley and robson, there is only 1 winner and thats worrying.the gap is widening.

The only reason that Rangers got to the UC final last year was Wattenacio. The best exponent of Wattenaccio at Rangers was Hemdani. Hemdani was outstanding especially in away games for Rangers last season. Why was his name not the first name on the team sheet last night ? Surel ynot to prevent him from being cup tied? If so how much does Hemdani earn? I thought he would be one of the players that Rangers can afford. Everything (i.e Wattenaccio) that Watty has brought to Rangers since his arrival is geared to stay in tournaments for as long as possible and maximising revenues.

The tinkering of team selection by prohibiting Walter from choosing to play Cuellar and Hemdani as it was only against FBK Kaunus was disrespectful and playing with fire.

I hope they manage to get deals cos if they dont it shows how much Murray´s mis management is costing Rangers. If Cuellar doesn´t go this month then I´d expect him to do a Boumsong.

Quiz:

WHo said ?

"At first I wanted to stay in the Premier League and I had the pen in my hand to sign. "Then, at the last minute, they said that the chairman wasn't here and I had to wait. So I said, okay, I would come back tomorrow.
"Then the gaffer called me up about Rangers and spoke very well with me and I chose Rangers. It was very difficult to leave England but I think this was a good choice.
"I know it's a big club, last year they won two trophies. It's a dream to come to Rangers because they play in Europe every year.
"It's the ambition of every player to play in the Champions League or the UEFA Cup, which is why I came here."

#42 well i would play 3-4-3 or 3-5-2, i wouldnt worry about which team i was playing, i would let them worry about us, the opposite of Mr Smith

GK we need a RANGERS number 1, dury still out on keeper
CB Bougherra
CB Cuellar (my CAPTAIN)
CB Broadfoot/Loovens
RM we dont have
LM we dont have
DCM Ferguson
CM we dont have, maybe Tommo/Davis
CM we dont have, this is the number 10, a free kick taker, a wee genius, someone who can pass and shoot!
CF Lafferty
CF Boyd/Velicka

we need a whole new midfield, with legs(who can run), who can shoot, who have cohesion, who can pass together quickly and forward, who can CREATE for our strikers who look bad because they are starved of clear chances.

We need to pay off or get rid of

Beasley (injured too frail speed not enough)
Novo (just not good enough)
Alexander (hopeless stand in)
Weir (too old too slow)
Dailly (imposter, why is here?)
McCulloch ( a waste at 2.25m, why is he here and what is his sell on value?)
Adam (rubbish, slow, cant shoot, my freekick scoring ratio is better than his!)
Cousin (troublemaker, doesnt want to be here)
Darcheville (never a striker, not enough goals)
Burke (who is he again? offers nothing!)

NONE of these players contribute anything to our squad or team.BTW how many of these duds did Smith buy? i think all of them except Novo! there ye go.(he gave burke/adam a new deal when they showed NOTHING)

hows that swordy?

Hmm..even Daryll King is worried..must be bad!!

"Essentially, what happened last night has just strengthened the grip of Celtic around Rangers neck; the Parkhead club have out-muscled them for a while now in terms of transfer fees and wages, but are now in a position to deliver blows that could put their Old Firm rivals back years.

Investment in their playing staff in the next few weeks - funded further by the fact they will bank an extra £2m in Champions League TV money now as Scotland's sole representatives in the group stage - would firmly establish Celtic as favourites to win the SPL title again, and have another straightforward passage back into the groups.

They feed off the same money tree as their rivals in terms of Europe, and will know exactly what kind of carnage a result like last night can cause after suffering the same fate three years ago against Artmedia Bratislava.

Celtic's reaction will be very interesting. Presented to them has been an opportunity to leave Rangers behind, and a few class additions to what is already, man for man, a better group, could take them into the distance - with the Ibrox side bereft of funds to try and catch up".

I disagree, I think we do need him. Naka and Aiden can pick out a pass, but I'd like to see Aiden on the end of a few more passes, to add a few more goals to his game. Naka has toiled a wee bit through injury, so Crosas will be a good addition.

Most important for me though is in the CL. Hartley/Robbo/Broony can all be spoilers, but in certain matches, the ability to spot that early through ball can be critical. Donati was supposed to give us that, but hasn't, hopefully Crosas will. I think Donati's on the way out now. Xmas..cheerio.

#68 no probs, to be honest mate, i think my fellow bears will be hiding or too embarrassed to come on the net today, or even watch the news, im so gutted, i thought i would have some fellow bears to confide in, instead i have found myself getting on swimmingly with 2 jungle jims who also know how bad we are, ive had a better conversation with you 2 than i have ever had with gers fans on here, they WERE ALL in denial, hopefully now their eyes are wide open! its time to act.

I seem to remember that it was Darryl Broadfoot of The Herald (as objective as Ronnie Esplin?) who was suggesting that WS should be given a knighthood because of the inevitable quadruple that was coming his way. Now that it was reduced to a couple of useless wee cups and being kicked out of Europe before QotS, perhaps Her Majesty could still be prevailed upon to bestow some token to dignify his genius?

What about a Compensatory Standard Grade in Media Management?

Saint Darius and Saint Gireno, pray for us, and thank you for looking down kindly on proceedings on this, the Feast of The Transfiguration.

#84 thats the kind of sh*t that gets these threads closed down, there is no place for that crapp here, not surprising it came from a Smelltic fan! Sorry swordy and TNT. Florestan is the kind of clown that lets the side down! Where are the bears????

Chaz, the content of 84# is not actually that bad, however, totally unnecessary. Florestan, keep it football related eh? and we might have somewhere to debate/gloat for the rest of the season.

Your reinforcements have not yet arrived Chaz, bears with sore heads I guess!

In case you are wondering, here is a translation. Again harmless, again, pointless!

Where charity and love are, God is there.
Christ's love has gathered us into one.
Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him.
Let us fear, and let us love the living God.
And may we love each other with a sincere heart
89

twists'n'turns,

Actaully, maybe not pointless!

Incidentally Florestan, I have more than my fair share of Hail Mary's in my time from the wee parish priest!

But, this thread is gonna head on a downward spiral if we deviate to religion so cmon mate, back to the relevant stuff!

The bears would like to have a discussion with someone who doesn't label them "a celtic fan" or "in denial" just because they may have a different opinion from you.

You did the same the other week to BE.Then admitted you are too young to remember some of the previous bad times in the 60s,70s and 80s.

Try reading posts 35 or 69 again and realise you are talking about people who were watching Rangers when John Greig and the like were still around.

If you want sensible discussions then great but remember that bad as last night was it hasn't quite got to the level of failing to even qualify for Europe and then being gubbed by the mighty Chesterfield in the anglo-scottish cup.

I said it before and will repeat it, these kind of results occasionally happen this early in the season as proved only three years ago.( And this week in Manchester as you must agree the Faroes are even worse for football than Lithuania.)

If they are still playing as poorly in 3 or 4 weeks then I will eat humble pie and admit I was talking out my rear end and you were correct, but going on last season the tic are not as uncatchable as you think. A couple more even breaks in the last OF game and we would be sitting pretty now.

Finally, I also would like to see the likes of Fleck playing more often so we are not as far apart in our opinion as you think I just don't believe in slaughtering my own team.

I'm sure Chaz will debate the merits of your post Invictager, but just one comment from me, and that is re young Fleck. He was deemed capable at the end of last season in that he got a place in the cup final squad, so I agree he should probably be regarded as a better option in midfield than Christian Dailly.

(I've also done the Texaco cup thing! Remember Burnley!!)

chazbud,

#97 you are just using the past as an excuse, there were no excuses last night, its a joke, and you will be eating humble pie in 3 or 4 weeks if walter is still there, these results dont just happen, its ALWAYS down to something,

bad management

building a poor squad

negative tactics

wrong team

embarrassing, sorry invictager its time to move into 21st century!

I give up. Lets agree to leave it at that.

I hope you are man enough to admit you were wrong if it gets turned around ,just as I will.

Anyway lets stop arguing and hope it does get better as we both want the same thing.

Put some of that energy into having a go at the other side as well. They are not that great and would have won nothing but for the rub of the green ( ironic) in a few games.
101

chazbud,
