MEMBERS of the public are being asked to help catch kerb crawlers in Leith by taking down the registration numbers of suspicious vehicles.
Police issued a plea for help after the number of complaints about sex workers in Leith began to rise again.

They have asked local residents to be on the lookout for drivers trawling for prostitutes and contact police with their details.

Pc Lee
Jack, based at Leith Police Station, said: "Prostitution calls have seen a sharp increase this month. There seems to be no reason for this. However, it is something we are monitoring very closely.

"I ask that people continue to call us regarding this problem, and if possible provide vehicle registration numbers of cars frequenting the area and picking up the street workers."

Police in Leith dealt with more calls about prostitution during October than they had in previous months – 11 complaints in total.

Residents believe that in the last six weeks more young prostitutes have been openly working on Leith Links, many of them Eastern European, instead of in the long-established Salamander Street area.

Kerb crawlers have also been seen in surrounding streets – Claremont Park and Pirniefield Place – along with what are thought to be pimps in sports cars, seen speaking with the women before driving off.

Linda Tarbuck, chairman of Leith Links Residents Association, said: "There are certainly concerns. We see young girls, kerb crawlers and pimps. The prostitutes often wait at bus stops, simply stepping back if a bus comes. It's put people off letting their children get off there."

Prostitution support workers believe more people are seeing street workers in residential areas around Leith Links, because of the law that last year made kerb crawling an offence.

Women are straying away from the established prostitution area, so their clients are not as easily recognised by the police.

Ruth Morgan Thomas, project manager of Scot-Pep, a Newhaven-based support group, said: "We keep asking the women not to work in residential areas – we realise it has an impact on a community. At the same time, though, the situations that lead the women to be there are often out of their control. About 95 per cent of them are drug addicts, and a significant number have alcohol issues, along with homeless and mental health problems."

Mmm.. so should you happen to be lost, some spy will pass your reg on, then what!!!

|The police cant do anything without evidence, so what exactly will this achieve?

If there's a problem, the surely police should be patroling the area, not expecting the public to do their job for them!

And like #2 says, the police cannot do anything without proof and the public taking registrations of cars is not proof of wrongdoing. This idea is completly open to abuse!

If I see someone crawling on the kerb, just where do I look to find their number? Outside the Omni centre every weekend is a good place to start looking ,perhaps the police already know this tho.

Why not place the CCTV van in the area for a month?

Great stuff from L&B Police - now if you have an argument with someone, you can give their registration number to the police and accuse them of kerb-crawling!

Beware, driving slowly on icy roads will get your number reported. Slow moving vehicles are no sign of kerb crawling. Time for the police to do their job instead of sitting outside doughnut shops

The prostitutes are crawling out the walls these days, theres loads of them , drove back from musselburgh on sat night, all the way from seafield up to ferry road, never seen anything like it, mostly foreigners. As they basically degrade an area can the polis no just round them up for being a nuisance ?

Linda Naelife says it puts people off letting there children get off there. Why? In case they see a prostitute!! God give me strength. They are prostitutes not predatory paedophiles or psycopathic mass murderers.
Speaking of that where is James our local prostitute hater? Oh he'll be up the Links taking down the registration numbers.

It seems that everybody can identify 'sex workers' but the police.
If the wh*res are removed there would be no kerb crawlers or stupid articles like this one.

#8 JayDeeTee "Where do the prostitutes park their own cars about? Shouldn't we be taking their numbers as well. They are part of the crime as well, aren't they?"

ROTFLMAO! Come to that, where do they hang up their fur coats, deal in their shares and eat their caviar?
20

leithlink,

03/12/2008 17:49:43
#19 Ah, but then they'd be competing for the same stance as male prostitutes, and that, as agreed by Margo MacDonald is in the "too hard to think about" basket.
Taking numbers will be a fine idea until the first Liberal Democrat Councillor from the Borders who is "lost" is reported. That is how it was reported wasn't it, EN?

N0 9 Dragonlord. It is pie shops they sit outside in the uk, doughtnut shops in the usa

If you want the police don't phone or go to the station, go to the pie shop, or go to a nice open stretch of road with a ridiculously low speed limit you will find one there hiding in an unmarked van, probably eating a pie, thats your best bet should you happen to want one

The Sheriff,

There are plenty of real crimes for the police to worry their sorry little erses over rather than persecute those who wish to provide a service for those who wish to use it.

We've been having this debate for years and the simple answer is to make prostitution legal as it is in many other european countries,I take it we are in the EEC?

Is PC Lee Jack too young in service to remember the unfortunate case of the Borders Cooncillor who came up to the big smoke to visit his Auld Auntie? And got lost in Leith, so he stopped to ask the way from a girlie on a street corner. And got huckled by the Polis. Not once, but twice. Still, a wee phone call to the Deputy Chief Constable soon sorted out that wee misunderstanding.

I would much rather the police resources were used to contain the actions of the feral youth currently terrorising many areas of the city. Have a fast reaction number linked to a dedicated squad available to the public to try to round up those young thugs.Calling 999 is too complicated an option as the caller is directed and redirected here there and everywhere before getting a response...and then only if judged to be a priority.
I'm not sure what harm ,apart from nuisance value, kerb crawlers pose to the general public.

#14 your type must be getting very nervous? Now they are asking the public to target your customers cars.
You are right though, these residents have a nerve actually expecting that there should not be prostitutes selling themselves outside their homes.
Absolutely outragous to expect that.
It is clear you want children to be exposed to this and see nothing wrong with it.
You have provided the proof, if it had been needed, that we need people with moral standards just a teeny wee bit higher than the gutter for you to look up to.
26

James (1),

#23 Do drug dealers fall into this category?

Why is it you think making it legal will make it go away? You mention it being made legal abroad but you do not mention the problems it causes. Is it because you are ignorant of the fact that it still causes problems or that you don't care?

As most of you bloggers appear to be aged between 14 and 16 and don't stay in the affected area, let me explain. Prostitution is an offence. Kerb Crawling is an offence. One attracts the other and both are extremely antisocial, especially to those living with it on their doorstep! Why not appeal for local assistance. Now go and do something constructive.

#30. I wish I was between 14 and 16. However, that passed me by a long time ago.

FYI, prostitution.... that is the sale of sex... is NOT illegal. Soliciting for it is. Kerb crawling is, but purchasing sex isn't.

My 16 year old knows that ;0)
35

Call me cynical, but,.........,

Edinburgh 04/12/2008 19:05:40
How can the police be expected to catch kerb crawlers and other "proper" criminals, wehn they are too bust on their "cyclists with dodgy lights" campaign. - Come on decent law abiding citizens, lets give L&B`s finest a hand here, as after all, they can`t be sitting in their nice warm stations and hassling people in charge of a lethal bycicle at the same time, as well as having to write down car numbers.
36

James (1),

04/12/2008 19:18:13
#34 Yes I do. Unlike the (now what word can I sarcastically use? Oh yeah...) ladies selling themselves.
I apologise for my error. We all make mistakes. If I was trying to score points because I had no come back I would have done the same as you. However I would only have used one ' and not two " because having used two is a bit common. Oh! just like you have done.
