Published Date: 05 June 2008
A GANG of vandals are being hunted by police after killing a prized tree in Princes Street Gardens by cutting away all of its bark.
Gardeners discovered the damage yesterday morning, with large pieces of bark left scattered around the bare tree trunk, which had also been badly scored by knives in the attack.

Council workers believe a group of youths were responsible for the damage, and the tree will now have to be removed.

The vandals also trampled on a nearby flower bed and set small fires on the lawns, while a young cherry tree just a few feet away was snapped almost in half.

It has been patched up, but staff at the gardens said the vandalism was becoming a worryingly regular occurrence.

Gardener Kenny Walker said: "This has killed the tree. Without its bark it will become diseased and will wither away. It will have to be taken out.

"It is such a shame, as it is a lovely tree and I can't understand why people would do this. When I saw it I was just stunned at the extent of the damage.

"We do get quite a lot of vandalism here and it has been growing. They do silly things like smashing bottles over flower beds, ripping up shrubs and flowers and throwing them about, or even setting small fires."

The tree was a 25-year-old sagus, and was described by gardeners as a "specimen tree", as it is an unusual type to be found in a Scottish park.

It was set on its own in the middle of a lawn at the back green of East Princes Street Gardens, and was planted during a major refurbishment of the park.

Rowan Stein, 18, a retail assistant from Bruntsfield who regularly visits the gardens, said there was a problem with particular groups of youngsters causing damage to the park.

She said: "It is shocking and it is gangs of kids who cause these problems. There are Goths and other groups who hang out here, and you can see the litter they leave behind and the damage they cause, although I don't know if they would have done this.

"Lots of different groups use the park and I'm just worried that any teen who dresses a little differently might now be asked to move on.

"It would be unfair for youngsters to be stopped from going to the park because of the actions of a few people."

Councillor Robert Aldridge, the city's environment leader, said: "This is a case of nothing more than mindless vandalism. Because of this damage this 25-year-old tree has been killed and will have to be removed.

"Our parks are a place for the public to relax and enjoy themselves.

"This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and we will be working with the police to take appropriate action."

I don't imagine this "attack" was carried out during the parks open hours. It's not hard to get into princess street gardens after hours. My freinds and I used to hang out there when we were younger.

They could always try planting another one. Nah, it'd never work.

Vandalism is a terrible thing, but surely the gardeners have a bark up tree.

What about the council vandals who cut down the trees on London Road and in Nicolson Square?

#2 What is your problem? Just because you personally don't think this is important doesn't mean others wont and doesn't make it bad journalism.

I happen to think that the destruction of an organism that has been growing for 25 years, in one of the most famous and well-used green spaces in Scotland, giving pleasure to millions of people during its life time actually IS something newsworthy and something to be greatly regretted.

I for one have absolutely no problem with a local newspaper telling us about such things rather than only reporting excessively on squabbling between Independence supporters and Unionists, or the latest head-in-the-sand nonsense about Oil or Nuclear Power, etc, etc.

I'm sure they can and will eventually plant a replacement, but what took a bunch of stupid thugs one evening to destroy will take quarter of a century to replace - probably longer than the vandals have been alive if indeed it was, as alleged in the article, a group of young people.

#8 Quite right Phyl!

We adults are running scared of kids these days. We have to start standing up to them again, and we need to feel confident that if an adult in a public space challenges anti-social behaviour, others will back him/her up.

Too often if someone does stand up to a group of ne'er-do-wells, the other adults around walk away or won't get involved.

Solidarity could really help here.

#2 What is the matter with you? Vandalism is a crime, just as murder is. And I feel certain that if it were your tree, you would scream about it.
It doesn't make for bad journalism to report this story. The people need to know vandals are on the prowl, and that something is being done.

If they are cutting up trees, some people may view it as trivial.

But if they are cutting up trees, they must also be carrying knives. And knives kill people.

16 Knives dont kill people , heroin does.

I'm still trying to understand why vandals would " kill a prized tree in Princes Street Gardens by cutting away all of its bark"

Some of its bark yes. But all of it ?

If we got to the root cause of the problem, these vandals would leave the trees alone and they'd be oakay. I've just twigged that if the tree has lost it's bark, it'll have nae chance as a guard tree.

Yes - they had to call in Special Branch who quickly realised the cops were barking up the wrong tree.

Typical of todays youth - they are totally out of control. If the police make an effort and actually find the scum that is responsible for this atrocious crime, they ought to strip off their bark and see how they like it.

"Yes - they had to call in Special Branch who quickly realised the cops were barking up the wrong tree."

The Bough Street Runners want to n1p this in the bud and are looking for tree fellers who've been a thorn in their side. No doubt when they catch them, they'll go to the crown court.

No doubt they'll be sent on a llama-trekking holiday in the hope that they'll turn over a new leaf.

I will never understand WHY!!! there is not a more of Police presence at all times in Princess Park? Especially "FOOT PATROLS" at "ALL" HRS! But mainly between midnight & 8AM.
Get The Police off their "DUFFS" & wearing out "Souls & Heals" of their shoes on foot patrol in all parks in Edinburgh. Closed Circuit TV does not catch anyone in the than & now.
Why do You think that the NYPD has a Fully maned Pct in Central Park in NYC? 24/7 --just for things like this. Especially between Midnight & 8AM.
