Published Date: 11 November 2008
A CAMPAIGN to introduce an "express lane" for pedestrians on Princes Street has been launched.
Research carried out in the Capital recently showed that 77 per cent of shoppers in Edinburgh wished they could carry out their retail requirements on the high street quicker.

In response, Nurofen Express has launched a campaign for an express lane on the street, with an online petition already receiving 247 votes.

Psychologist Linda Papadopoulos said: "We're all living life faster than ever before and this study shows the same is true on our high streets. It's not an indulgent treat to go for a leisurely shop anymore as commuters and shoppers tussle to go about their business.

"The recent evolution of 'pavement rage' demonstrates the need for express lanes in an effort to entice people back to the high street and make it a more pleasurable experience for everyone."

This is just an advertising gimmick for Nurofen. I assume that the EN is just covering it because they or their parent company must be an advertiser.

It's certainly c**p journalism.

Short of making everyone in Edinburgh carry a wet mackerel on top of their head, I can't think of anything more stupid in the history of the world.

But it's fun to try to say "Psychologist Linda Papadopoulos" three times very quickly.

no6 yip they have

and given that the pavements will be reduced in width to accomodate the trams, how will they accomodate the fast lane

what next "foot" wardens giving out tickets for stopping , people getting done for speeding.

Hold on, I could be onto something here, sounds like a a good money spinner for the Council.

The current proposal is deeply flawed! The sensible way forward would be to introduce a dedicated pedestrian lane for those with proof of a principal residence in EH1, 2 or 3. This would separate us from the burger-guzzling, track-suited herd and allow unimpeded progress towards important business meetings in the city centre.

Cyclists on the pavement? Now that WOULD be an express lane but another tale altogether!
There'll soon be the trams! DING!

No 11 Andrew : There'll soon be the trams! DING!

Roll on 2011! It will be far more convenient and comfortable for me to drop the Lexus 4x4 off at Ingliston and board a tram direct to Victoria Quay for my occasional consultancy duties than the present method of boarding a rickety X48 bus then transferring to the 'schemie specials' that is the service 22. My imminent Scottish Concessionary Travel Pass will make it all the more agreeable. Ding ding!

Pedestrians should also have to have a pavement tax permit( issued for a modest fee by the council) for using the express lane, thereby pricing more of the riff raff elements out of the express lane and into the gutter. Hi- Vis jackets should also be mandatory in the express lane ( issued for a 'modest' fee by the council)to prevent high speed accidents; we all know that speed kills!

Well I for one am sick of doddering old f@rts getting in my way on that street - the sooner we get the Nurofen™ Lane the better.
