COUNCIL workers were today receiving ballot papers asking them to vote on the latest local government pay offer.
But the three unions involved – Unison, GMB and Unite – are urging their members to reject the proposed increases of three per cent for this year and 2.5 per cent for 2009.

The new offer comes following two one-day strikes across the country, which saw schools and council offices close and bins go uncollected.

Dougie Black, Unison regional organiser and lead negotiator, said: "This offer is not a good offer – especially when inflation is riding around five per cent – but our negotiators felt that we should put it before our members in a full postal ballot.

"It is clear from employers' statements that they are digging in for a major dispute, and we will be telling our members that increased and longer strike action will be needed to deliver an offer that protects them from the major rises that they have experienced in food, heating and fuel."

In the current economy they should not be looking for a rise, they should wait until the economy settles for dozens of good economic reasons.

Give them the choice of a wage increased or no wages. If they are given an increase don't they realise that the council will cut staff numbers.

It's time to think out of the selfish wee boxes they and their unions are living in.

I dont think there is anything wrong with our council workers wanting to avoid a pay cut, or heaven forbid, get a small rise!
The truth is the people who are really raking in the money are not the workers, but the council bosses.

Why not pick a fight with the wealthy elites in this country who are ripping us all off, and show some support!

In this economic crisis, ordinary people should be sticking together, and demanding that we dont let the bosses and owners cut our pay, or make us unemployed.

We need to stick together, or the bosses and owners will shove all the costs of the recession onto ordinary people like ourselves (with public services cuts, unemployment, increased prices), while making sure that they are still getting richer.

I think you'll find that every time 1 to 5 see one of these headlines about council staff being unhappy at the pay rise that they have been offered, or see council workers doing apparently nothing during working hours they think of several questions such as.

Why are there so many of them doing very little?

Why do they get a final salary pension when I don't?

Why do I pay so much council tax each month to keep these lazy jobsworths in a job?

Why, if they are paid so poorly, do they not apply for a position in the real world?

Why do they get six months sick leave on full pay each year?

And there I was thinking that union members elected the general secretaries to carry out the members` wishes. It seems that the union secretaries tell the members what they should be thinking and what they are to do, with only the charade of a loaded ballot.
