THE Tories will launch their campaign for the forthcoming Glenrothes by-election today.
Candidate Maurice Golden will be joined by Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie MSP and David Mundell MP for the official launch in Markinch.

Yesterday Mr Golden said that the party can win the seat, which will be contested on November 6.

He insisted the Tories are fighting "to win the election".

He said: "We're seeing a lot of people swinging, a lot of people undecided and I'm seeing on the doorsteps feedback that's very positive for the Conservatives."

The other main candidates are Nationalist Peter Grant, the local council leader, Lindsay Roy of Labour, who is a local headteacher, and Lib Dem Harry Wills.

The Tories are trying to talk up their own significance in the contest, but they must know full well which party will be ciphering off their vote (clue: it won't be Solidarity or the SSP).

I like how they say the nationalist...isn't most people in these Isles nationalists? Whether Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, English, Northern Irish or I hate to say it British. Tories you have no chance. Do you really think that you are going to turn the tables in a country where you introduced the poll tax and if you get in power, will probably slash the funding that Scottish people get at the moment? The Celtic nations will never be conservative nations!

#2 The Tories won a majority of Scottish seats as recently as 1955.
