Published Date: 27 November 2008
DEPUTY First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today pledged "decisive action" to help the construction industry tackle the economic downturn, including funding a development in West Lothian.
Ms Sturgeon revealed that "accelerated investment" of £9 million would be ploughed into a string of housing developments across Scotland, allowing housing associations to purchase unsold stock from the private sector.

But there was no word of bri
nging forward extra money for the Capital, where city leaders are struggling with the demand for an estimated 12,000 affordable homes in the next ten years.

West Lothian will get a share of £3.5m to finance the building of 24 new properties for Almond Housing Association by the end of next year.

A further £4.1m will fund land purchase by housing associations for future developments in Orkney, Perth and Kinross, Falkirk, East & West Dunbartonshire, and Argyll, and £1.4m will go to fund the purchase of unsold stock from the private sector in Falkirk and Perth and Kinross.

Ms Sturgeon was due to say today: "The Scottish Government is under no illusion about the serious challenges facing Scotland's housebuilders.

"We are taking decisive action, within our powers, to help alleviate the brunt of the credit crunch on developers, and assist the delivery of more affordable homes.

"Housing associations will be able to buy off-the-shelf stock from the private sector. It will help the hard-pressed construction industry and increase much-needed affordable housing.

"This funding will kick-start site construction across Scotland, which I hope will herald a revival in the fortunes of Scotland's hard-pressed housebuilding industry."

Frank Anderson, executive councillor for services for the community on West Lothian Council, welcomed the extra funding.

"It will provide much-needed affordable housing for local people," he said.

"We would welcome the opportunity for further discussions about other possible funding as there is a continuing need for more affordable housing in West Lothian."

Council leaders in Edinburgh want extra money to build thousands of new affordable homes.

A document submitted to ministers earlier this year outlined the extent of the housing crisis in the Capital, with close to 6000 families likely to be classed homeless next year.

Senior councillors said there is enough land in the city to solve the problem and said the council and its partners can use the economic slowdown to their advantage by buying up sites at knock-down prices.

Housing is becoming more affordable by the day.

The Government don't have to build 'affordable housing'. They simply just need to let it come to them.

In a time when house prices are stupid and based on flawed lending paractices - you hear about 'affordable housing'.

In a time when house prices are reasonable and based on sensible lending paractices - you hear NOTHING about 'affordable housing'. Simply because there is no need.

This country really is a joke. As usual the Germans understand basic common sense.

#1 And what crowns off the story is that this announcement is not of new money - it is a rehash of previously announced drops in the ocean. Pathetic.

It does seem to be muddled thinking to bring forward money to give to developers to buy property they have already built in order to help the construction industry. All they'll do is pocket the money: not build more houses.

And there's every chance prices will fall a bit more, so by bringing forward the money they probably won't get as good a buy now as they will in 6 months.

But it is a politician making the decision.

oh look. yet another attempt by ccc to derail the content of an article, to turn discussion towards the issue of dropping property prices!

you sad, sad individual. truly pathetic.

<< The First Minister specifically said it was NEW money at FMQs. >>

But is it new NEW money or NEW money that has already been announced elsewhere?

I try to keep up to date with extravagances and economies of truth, but it can be difficult :-)

# 7 says: I try to keep up to date with extravagances and economies of truth, but it can be difficult :-)

Yes it can be very difficult can't it. I'm presently listening to the news about India. Americans and British being picked out because their governments started an illegal war. Yes, it can be difficult.

#4 & 5.

"turn discussion towards the issue of dropping property prices"

"making the same old stupid and boring comments!"

-----------------------------------------------------

You guys are not the brightest are you ?

This article is about public money being used to buy/develop property. Call me crazy but somehow I think property prices falling is rather relevant to this story.....

If you can't face the facts at what is happening out there that is up to you. Just don't read my comments, watch the news, read a paper, or open your front door.

Good luck.

CCC - what we are trying to say is change the record! Everyone is well aware of what is happening and to be honest the majority of people out there do not really want to hear your stupid remarks day-in and day-out! There are loads of people out there who are struggling at the minute CCC and your stupid and unfounded comments just make them feel worse - it is really big off you!

It is not about facing the facts becuase we all know them - the simple fact is you are a pathetic little fool - so good luck to you!

"stupid and unfounded comments"

Funny how my 'stupid and unfounded comments' from a year ago probably look forward thinking today...

I am providing a service - Simply letting people know the truth.

And for the record - falling property prices is a GOOD THING for most people. I am giving good news.

Why exactly do you have a problem with this.....
13

The Landlord,

Edinburgh 27/11/2008 16:39:44
Em no CCC for most people it is a bad thing!

On a funnier note you are so think it hurts!

People already know the truth CCC and as I mentioned above it bothers them a great deal whereby your immature comments add nothing!

Unfortunately for you my exam results tell me that infact I am not stupid - which is more than I could say about you! Sad losser!

The Landlord,

"Em no CCC for most people it is a bad thing!"

That comment pretty much sums up what I thought. You have no idea about property bubbles and their negative impact on society.

Falling property prices:

First time buyer - Good thing.
Someone buyer a bigger place - Good thing.
Someone buying a smaller place and pocketing the cash - bad thing.

You really should have a google and read up about it.

Surely the headline on this article should read, (in the normal house style), “Pressure grows on the SNP as affordable housing initiative is criticised.”

Today, an anonymous, hard of thinking and economically illiterate balloon posted on a Scotsman web-site, an un-thought out attempt to criticise the Scottish Government’s recent initiative to kick-start the ailing Scottish construction industry.

This critic admitted that he has no experience in economics or politics and forms his opinions from information he gleans from “Goggle”.

A spokeswomen for the Government said “Duh!”

I don't want to be rude but I probably know 100 times more about this situation that you do.

Get over it.

That being the case you are obviously rather adept at hiding this fact.

#16 Kick-starting the construction industry??!? It wouldn't be dead on its feet if the SNP hadn't canned every single planned PFI funded schools and facilities contract on the basis of a non-existant "Scottish Futures Trust". 19 months and counting - not a single brick laid.

The Landlord,

CCC - I love it when you prove that I am right and you have no idea what you are talking about:

1. falling house prices are bad for everyone who owns a house - this is a bigger percentage of the population than first time buyers;
2. falling house prices show the economy is going the wrong way and people stop spending/people lose their jobs/everything is rubbish!

I don't expect you to get this CCC!

what i know about ccc:

he rents a room for 300 quid a month.

he has never ownned real estate (or raised a mortgage on it.....whatever).

he apparently has his own "business", which involves hanging around some sort of investors or similar, (probably a trolly-dolly).

he thinks "funny-money", and has no sense of macro-economic scale.

he is a self-depricating A-hole without even knowing it.

what i guess about ccc:.

he is single. i mean, who would want to be with a twot like that.

what i would like to know about ccc:

age. spotty teen or demented OAP?

what he is smoking/ drinking/ sniffing/ snorting/ jacking?

conclusion?
knnobb.
