New Scottish Secretary aims to net readers

NEW Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy today launched an official blog in a bid to promote a dialogue with the public.
In his first posting, he promised he would use his new post to defend Scotland's interests at the highest levels and work with anyone who wanted to advance those interests, but warned he would also "vigorously oppose ideas and actions that will damage Scotland and her people".

Mr Murphy, who took over from Des Browne last week, said: "When I was Minister for Europe I had a regular blog. I found it a useful way of letting people know what was going on in Europe, and I got a lot of good feedback. Now I'm Secretary of State for Scotland I'm going to carry on blogging and I look forward to having a dialogue about the really important issues that face our country."

He launched the blog as the official starting gun for the long-awaited Glenrothes by-election was being fired, setting polling day as November 6.

The problem with a statement like that is it is already clear that he has already broken that promise.

What are scotland interests and who defines them? Scotland interests are not labour interests. The only way we can seriously define scotland interests are those set by the scottish parliament.

Take the council tax rebate. The scottish government believe scotland should keep the money and not by punished for utilising the power of the scottish parliament to change the method of local government tax. The lib dems and tories agree even though the tories are against the snp taxation proposals they are taking the moral high ground.

labour however want to withhold that money from scotland despite the fact they set up the scottish parliament and gave it the powers to vary council taxation. Barmy i know. Further more council tax rebate was also included in labour documentation regarding the scottish block grant.

So will Murphy stand up for scotland interests and argue scotlands position as reflected by the overwhelming support for it in the scottish parliament. Or will Murphy turn out to be a liar and put labours narrow party polical interests above Scotlands national interest. Will Murphy argue in cabinet Scotlands position and fight for Scotland.

Result. Murphy is no sooner in the post that his turns out the be a liar as he is putting labours view ahead of scotlands national interest as espouced by the scottish parliament. Pathetic.

I knew Jim when he was president of the scottish students union - nice guy but the words p*ss up, brewery & couldn't organise spring to mind - up and cmoing new labour star :-)

Well done Jim. I see that you intend to "vigorously oppose ideas and actions that will damage Scotland and her people".

Any idea, through your connections at Westminster,as to when we English might get someone to look after our interests? The quisling MPs who represent English constituencies are allowing our Scottish PM, Scottish Chancellor etc. to run roughshod over us at the moment.
I have to say however that I can't see how the people of Scotland need you to look out for their interests. Alex Salmond seems to be doing a pretty godd job as far as we English can see!

Think you'e missed a major point here. The SNP is THE ONLY major SCOTTISH party hence they are more than likely to represent Scotlands interests better than a Unionist party who are basically London yes men/women. Oh and Jim Murphy Labour Yes man

Oh and in case the new colonial man from Engerland hasn't noticed, Scotland currently has a democratically elected Government, headed by the democratically elected first minister, Alex Salmond, who represent ALL SCOTLANDS INTERESTS, rather well.

Funny, I just cannot recall the election for the man to be Scottish Secretary - oh, that's right there wasn't one. Jim Murphy, away and catch on to yourself.

12 and 13. We English didn't elect Jim Murphy you Scottish did. We didn't elect MP for Kirkaldy and Cowdenbeath Gordon Brown either! Jim Murphy was born in Glasgow and is MP for East Renfrewshire!
I just hope that all of Scotland votes SNP at the next Westminster and Holyrood elections so that Alex Salmond and the Scottish people can bring this farce of a Union to an end!
