Greens hit out over velodrome

GREEN councillors today attacked the city's ruling Lib Dem/SNP administration for showing a "lack of willingness" towards building a new track cycling facility in Edinburgh.
Many of the Capital's young cyclists train at Meadowbank's velodrome, which is earmarked for demolition.

The city council has promised to find an "affordable and practicable solution" for providing replacement facilities, but Green councillor Alison Johnstone said this did not go far enough.

"I am absolutely astonished at the lack of willingness to commit to the provision of a new track cycling facility," she said.

City sports leader Deidre Brock replied: "Cllr Johnstone has either missed the point or is playing on semantics here. We want to provide a new cycling facility, but quite rightly we need to know what Scottish Cycling and other key groups see as a priority before we move forward."

No, Deidre, you are the one playing with semantics. It is evident that their are no plans to build a new velodrome. An "affordable and practicable solution" for "a new cycling facility' probably means ringfencing a few pennies from the Meadowbank land-sale profits for repainting some ASL markings. Why not be honest about it, and acknowledge that one of Edinburgh's most successful sporting traditions is about to come to an end?

Then why have you decided to demolish it before choosing the venue for the new cycling facility?

'Semantics' sits rather harmoniously, in this instance, below a word in the dictionary describing a matter unravelling ...
Whoever wrote your quote Deidre will doubtless explain the parody of disingenuously wresting the sense out of an issue and a fissure.
Stop pissing around and tell the cyclists if you're going to deliver their new cycling facility.

One of the Green councillors, Alison Johnstone seems to have got the bit between her teeth on this one: good on her! Edinburgh has a superb record in producing world-class cyclists. Deirdre "Soap" Brockie needs to make a commitment to back them.

The existing one, just like Meadowbank, is an eyesiore and needs to be demolished sooner rather than later.

By all means build a new velodrome but lets see the people who use it pay a fee for use that reflects the specialised area that they want to play/practice in. Tax payers have no interest in supporting every wee group of people that want services provided for them.

Better still, is there not some velodrome users group type thing that could do some fund raising to assist in building and maintaining this. Any organisation worth its salt would have some provision in place should this sort of thing happen. They wouldn't expect councils and taxpayers to cough up.

See a short Video of Chris Hoy's arguments to Edinburgh City Council over its plans to downsize and sell off Meadowbank including the Meadowbank Velodrome that was his platform to success.
