Freight on the water 'viable'
THE Union Canal has been identified as a waterway suitable for carrying freight in a new study by the Department for Transport.
The study assessed which canals had the greatest potential for freight services. However, British Waterways today said there was limited demand from freight operators to use Scotland's canals, so it was unlikely to happen.
Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "Our aim is to promote the use of our waterways for freight transport where they provide a viable alternative to road freight."
