Council needs detail, discussion and dialogue, says Ewan Aitken
I AGREE with Jenny Dawe's recent comment that we have had a momentous year in Scottish political life, but sadly that's where our common ground ends.

Of the long list of "achievements" claimed by Councillor Dawe since becoming the leader of the Ci
ty of Edinburgh Council, only the return to the committee system is an actual Lib Dem policy.

She claims commitment to a school building programme, yet not only did the school building programme begin under Labour but she and her colleagues voted against it – again and again. And, of course, the SNP Government at Holyrood has now cancelled five schools planned by Labour.

Cllr Dawe claims her Lib Dem/SNP administration has increased park-and-ride capacity, yet these park-and-ride schemes were begun and virtually completed under Labour. She says she is committed to the use of schools for community activity, again a Labour policy that was being implemented prior to May 2007. She also welcomes the appointment of neighbourhood managers and the 12 new Neighbourhood Partnerships – a model devised and delivered by Labour before she was in power.

Unlike her SNP partners, Cllr Dawe lauds the arrival of trams – another policy outlined and developed by Labour. She wants more early intervention for vulnerable children, yet Labour delivered two significant projects in the city and funded more in the voluntary sector – a sector which will be decimated through the cuts being implemented by this Lib Dem/SNP council.

Our role as the capital city is crucial to the nation but obtaining the "potential" of extra funding is not enough. Our city needs a plan for its role, yet I see no plan from the administration.

Proportional representation, (delivered by Labour), has changed the face of Scottish local government. But what this administration has conspicuously failed to grasp is that proportional representation is not just a new way of voting, it was supposed to herald a new way of doing politics. Despite its return to the committee system, it seems unable or unwilling to engage with the opposition parties in any meaningful way.

In a council of minorities, that will have to change or the city will suffer, as we have already seen with the flawed schools consultation and the inability to take big decisions on issues such as Meadowbank.

We need detail, dialogue and discussion in the City Chambers. It should be about looking for common ground; not necessarily compromise but sharing ideas and working together for common solutions. I am pleased for the city that it is Labour policies that are still being implemented but I am deeply saddened that this is because we have an administration without the vision and ideas to take our city forward.

Ewan Aitken is the leader of the Labour group at Edinburgh City Council

Doh,

This is the same Labour leader that ran up the budget overspend that are hurting the city now.

Also good to see that the current council doesnt have the same "Vision" of Ewan Aitken.

The previous Labour council supported the closure of Meadowbank and the Mountgrange development.

But now he has chanegd his mind.
That is vision alright.
Double vision.

Euan Aitken left a black hole of £25 millions and ran down Council assets to virtually zero. That is the vision left to Edinburgh by the previous Labour administration.

"And, of course, the SNP Government at Holyrood has now cancelled five schools planned by Labour."

Another Labour lie. Labour had no money to do build these and could not persuade Labour Scottish Executive to provide funds to Edinburgh for this purpose.

Edinburgh will have to reapply to this funding. It has not been cancelled.

Actually the committee system is important for long-term democracy in Edinburgh: The New Labour control freaks ran a council where real power was concentrated in the hads of a few - and the paid officials ran riot without any democratic scrutiny. Councils should never use the "cabinet" style of government so beloved of the Labour Party - it effectively neuters all debate and prevents democratic representation. Why is this important in the real world? Well CTRM, road tolls, EDI & TIE being allowed to get away with what they like, Caltongate AND THE POTENTIAL SCHOOLS CLOSURES etc etc - all flow from the way that the Labour Party allowed power to be centralised with a few "executive" councillors and the senior paid officers.

As for "unable or unwilling to engage with the opposition parties in any meaningful way" what that actually means is that the Labour Party has been trying hard to wreck, disrupt, misrepresent and personally smear the new administration - and this has been resisted.

As for "the SNP Government at Holyrood has now cancelled five schools planned by " - that is of course a misrepresentation of the truth, bordering on an outright lie. The previous adminstration had never actually got any plans off the ground - nothing has been cancelled because there was nothing to cancel! And he's not mentioning the ridiculously expensive PFI deals that the city would have been saddled with.

The people of Edinburgh chose to get rid of this lot in May - so why is the EEN still so sycophantic?

Forgive me Ewan, but I think it is you who has trouble with vision here.

If a policy was thought up/articulated by the previous Labour administration, surely that doesn't give Labour the monopoly to these policies and renders any subsequent administration 'without vision'? If Labour uttered a common sense statement such as: 'we want to bridge the gap between rich and poor', then that does NOT make others visionless if they agree!?

Mr Aitken's problem is that he believes only Labour should be allowed to run anything. Well the voters said otherwise. Get used to it. The LibDems/SNP are doing their best to clear up the financial mess YOU left behind.

Pot and kettle spring to mind. Is this the same Ewan Aitken that left the City bankrupt due to the Labour policies and them raiding the contingency funds to try and sweeten the voterswith no council tax increases?.

Can Ewan Aitken please list the 5 schools which were subsequently cancelled?

Actually, he's quite right isn't he?

The Liberals and Nationalists haven't exactly set the heather alight since taking over - quite a contrast to the SNP nationally??

The new crowd ARE very inexperienced and they might just do well to listen a bit more to colleagues of all Parties in the City Chambers. It doesn't mean sharing power with them, just a new style of politics.
