A POLISH man today told how he was kicked and punched for 20 minutes by a group of racist attackers as one of them filmed the violence on a mobile phone.
Michalk Kasztelan, 28, was set upon by three young men who knocked him to the ground in the daylight attack in the city centre with other people around.

The victim, who has lived in Edinburgh for more than two years, said one of his attackers filmed the other two kicking him, before joining in himself.

Mr Kasztelan was treated at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after Tuesday night's attack, and he has been left with injuries to his eye, leg and arm.

He also has bruising across his face and body after he was kicked repeatedly by his attackers, who were all wearing sturdy labourers' boots.

He had been walking to his Leith Walk home when he was approached by the group on Rose Street at 7pm.

After realising he was Polish, the men started verbally abusing him and followed him to nearby Castle Street, where they began the attack. Mr Kasztelan, who works for a timber merchant in Livingston, said: "They asked me what I wanted from them and I said I didn't want anything. Then they realised I was Polish and said they hated Polish people and started to follow me.

"One of them was very young, about 18 or 19, and he recorded everything on his mobile. Then he started kicking me as well.

"My injuries are not serious but I visited the hospital and they gave me medication for pain."

Mr Kasztelan said there were a number of people in the area while he was being attacked, but no-one intervened, despite it being a prolonged assault.

His ordeal finally came to an end when his attackers were scared off by a taxi driver, who beeped his horn at them before offering the victim a lift.

The group, described as wearing labourers' clothes, were last seen heading west along Rose Street. Police today appealed for witnesses to the assault to come forward.

Mr Kasztelan said it was the first time since moving to the Capital that he had experienced any kind of racism, and said he has always found Scottish people to be "nice and friendly".

He said: "When they heard my voice and realised I was Polish they started to be much more aggressive and I'm sure that was the reason.

"All my friends in Poland and in Scotland can tell you that I'm an easy-going and very nice guy. I'm not looking for trouble.

It's the first time I have seen people who don't like people from Poland and I don't know why."

Police said all three attackers were white, with one aged 18-20 and the other two in their mid-20s. One of the older suspects was said to have a tattoo on his neck.

A police spokesman, who confirmed the assault was recorded on a mobile phone, said: "This was a completely unprovoked and racially motivated assault, which left the victim badly bruised and extremely shaken.

"The area of the city where the assault took place is normally fairly busy at this time of the evening, and we know there were several people who witnessed the incident.

"We want anyone who was in the area at the time and saw what happened to contact the police immediately. Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the three suspects – who may have been drinking in the area earlier in the evening or working nearby – should also get in touch with us."

Welcome to Edinburgh...
If they are found, which is highly unlikely, they will probably get sent away on a safari or something to "teach them a lesson".....justice...my ar*e!!!

While i fully condem any racist attacks or any other for that, I find it hard that if he had been repeatedly punched and kicked for 20 minutes, hes more than able to stand and has a small bruise on his cheek.
I somehow think 20 minutes is a wee bit like stretching the truth, surley the police could have made it in 20 minutes or was it their coffee break.
But I still hope these thugs get caught

When are people going to attack junkies and dole bums in the street? They are the real drain on society, not workers from an EU counrty!

Hope these scum get caught.

Cappo Del Mont, maybe it seams like 20 minutes when you are being kicked and punched to the ground. Focus on the bigger pitcure and stop making useless daft comments !!!!

and you are an even bigger weirdo gods lovechild, lets see what your face would look like after you were attacked for no reason !!!

Edinburgh folk are hardly the most fashionably dressed in Europe, so I cant imagine the clowns on here who comment on a jaiket being best placed to do so. Pots and kettles.

#9 Why don't you dress up as a hammer to your party and go as a complete tool.

As #12 rightly says - focus on the bigger picture. You're commenting (with atrocious spelling) on his jacket, as if that's the focus. Would love to see what all you style icons are wearing at this moment in time - and would love to see your faces after having the sh*t kicked out of you in broad daylight. Easy to hide behind the safety of the pc isn't it?

The guy didn't deserve this attack - imagine if it was your friend/brother. You'd have a completely different outlook.

An attack lasting 20mins in the city centre and not a police officer in sight? What about the city centre CCTV network? Are they not supposed to see everything??

what's polish for wee schemie gang of cowardly dobber scum?

I just hope in the 2 years that Michalkhas has been here that he has met enough cool scots people to know the difference between this scum and the rest.

...and I hope he doesn't go out and get himself a lock-knife to help his confidence...its not the answer.....best to get himself a shooter or at least a taser gun!! just kidding....a rotweiler!! no just kidding again.....a bazooka!!

...maybe if he took a photo of them on his mobile when they were following him...and emailed it to a friend (just in case they destroyed or stole the camera)...at least the police would make sure they would get the stern ticking off that no doubt the judge would only give them due to them crying over their nice suits in court......yeah! can't really see past pepper spray for the wee dobbers!!

20mins and all there is to show are bruises?
try 20seconds, and a broken cheek bone, operation, nerve damage due to both of them, still dont have full feeling down that side, although the pain nerve likes to give me loads of it (muscles are ok)
uhm....waiting in a police station for 3hours for an ambulance to become available as the cop car had to drop us off to report to an other incident (dad collecting me in the end) and 1st visit to a&e told i wasnt going to get an xray "as it would take too long"...yeah at 4/5oclock in the morning. Good yin.

And then the specialist at Livi hospital treating me like dirt because "i was an other teen in a street fight" when infact he didnt know my story and I was in an unprovoked attack.

why didnt the EEN do a report of this from me?

There are no CCTV cameras in Rose Street. So why not get worked up about that as opposed to being racist? Or is that too sensible?
29

Norman,

17/04/2008 19:42:52
Some real keyboard heroes here. I bet if you lost your internet connection for 20 minutes you'd be on the phone to the news desk of the EEN! Boo hoo.

hmmmm, not sure 17/04/2008 21:19:39
Firstly it's a terrible thing that has happened to this chap and let's hope the people who did this and are justly punished.
But can someone explain to me how this is a racist attack? Or has being Polish become a race?
It's a nationality - not a race. This is lazy and doesn't do justice to the chap, the EEN or anybody else.

Poor guy, but hell, that happens in Edinburgh to all nationalities, even I got hit with a brick without any reason – just a suitable target for bunch of drunken idiots. And yes, all those neds should get thrown into ghetto, where they could chase themselves with machetes whenever they like.

Anyway,

Here’s a part of United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination,

‘the term "racial discrimination" shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or >national< or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.'

Greets.

Passed these guys on Rose street that night, this story does not totally add up. There were 3-4 guys all pretty drunk, they stopped my girlfriend and I asking for a light for a cigarette. The main guy was angry at a man sitting outside a pub, he said that he had been around this Polish guy earlier that night and they must have got into an argument as he said the Polish guy used the word 'kurwa' (Insult)which these labourers got translated somehow. They carried on toward him shouting this word back at him, must've kicked off sometime after this.
