A VIGILANTE group targeting sex offenders in Edinburgh has set up its own website.
The group calling itself the Society Against Paedophiles launched the internet site yesterday.

The website calls on the city council to prevent convicted paedophiles being rehoused in the Capital.

Founder Paul Kernachan said: "We want to show people what is really going on in Edinburgh. These people are worse than dangerous dogs."

The group recently caused controversy after claiming to have been given night-vision scopes by a supermarket chain in Edinburgh to monitor sex offenders.

The group has been involved in demonstrations that have forced convicted paedophiles to leave their homes.

This is a horrendous and emotive subject, but this vigilantism feels counter productive and wrong. It's very reminisent of the Megan's Law debate/legislation in the US (see here for more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megan's_Law). Having a register that's publicly available would seem to only drive these people underground. It's unrealistic to take the moral high ground and yell for castration, sticking them all on a island somewhere or locking them all up and throwing away the key. People like this exist, have always existed and will continue to exist and at least by keeping their details known to the police and social services they can be monitored and treated, naive as that sounds.
It brings to mind the case from a few years ago of a teenager who was put on the Sex Offenders Register for looking at naked pictures of under-age girls (his own age)on the internet. It turned out that he, perhaps, lacked the social skills to engage with girls his own age and was mis-guidedly looking for an outlet. Were his details to be made public, would he be harrassed and monitored with a night vision camera?
Overwhelmingly, the people who commit these offences against children are relatives and "friends"; first time offenders and very unlikely to be on any registry.
I am a father of young children and of course, this is a terrifying and harrowing subject, but we need to have an adult debate based on the known facts and not the raging of mobs with mis-spelt signs.

As you can see, everyone has the right to free speech - even 'Vigilantes' : http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/business.cfm?id=127082007

Why are they being defined as 'vigilantes' anyway ? Is that the new term for anyone who takes on an issue these days ?

this will do more harm than good IMO

leave it to the police

i imagine many people in this group have children-so what happens when they take their law into their own hands and are sent to prison leaving their kids without a mum or dad?

#2 also has some good points, offenders are more often than not relatives or known to the victims

and child sex offenders are hardly going to roaming the streets in the middle of the night so i don't know what the night googles are all about

i had a look at this website very informative....... not...... www.societyagainstpaedophiles.org, i am all for protecting my kids and your kids if it comes to it, why are these people driving around in vehicles with tinted windows "we have our windows tinted out free of charge and the sign writing on all our vehicles done free of charge and vehicles are repaired free of charge cleaned free of charge and fuelled free of charge" seems like a whole lot of free of charge is being used here, but lets not hide behind tinted windows, let us the public see who excactly is running this band, or do you have something to hide???
by the way whoever done the site needs a crash course in grammar......free of charge, of course.

Fantastic idea.

Hopefully we can see this kind of action throughout not only Scotland but the western world in general.

The term 'vigiliante' has so many negative connotations, hence its use here by those who would detract from the worthiness of this idea and group.
