Joan Thistlethwaite, 62, a retired teacher from Portobello, picks her top five historic buildings in the city.
Edinburgh Castle Generations of children have visited the Castle. I remember visiting when I was a girl, then years later taking pupils along on trips.

St Giles' Cathedral Religious buildings always have that sense of grandeur about them and St Giles' is a prime example.

Craigmillar Castle It's amazing to see how well preserved this medieval castle is – well worth a visit.

Bank of Scotland HQ, The Mound Sadly overlooked by most people rushing past to the more traditional landmarks on the Royal Mile.

Holyrood Palace A wonderful building which has been so well maintained. It is simply stunning.
