A CITY peace campaigner has set up a new political party and plans to stand against First Minister Jack McConnell at the Scottish Parliament elections on May 3.
Richard Leat, 58, decided to launch the Anti-Trident Party as a focus for opposition to the renewal of Britain's nuclear deterrent, which MPs voted for earlier this month. And he said he would stand as the party's candidate in Mr McConnell's constituency of Motherwell and Wishaw.

The Anti-Trident Party hopes to fight three or four other seats in addition.

But where it is not fielding a candidate of its own, the party is urging people to vote for other parties or candidates who are "unambiguous" in their opposition to Trident.

Mr Leat, a self-employed builder from Rutland Square in Edinburgh's West End, said: "The Scottish Parliament has the power to stop Trident through its planning and health and safety powers," he said.

"If it chose, it could make it impossible for Trident to be established here.

"Many people claim the Scottish Parliament has too few powers to deal with an issue as big as this. But the parliament belongs to the Scottish people. It will be what we make of it. It is up to us to use it to get rid of Trident."

Does Richard Leat not know that the SNP are campaigning on removing Trident and one of their MSPs Michael Mathieson, has drafted a bill: Proposed Prevention of Crimes Committed by Weapons of Mass Destruction (Scotland) Bill 2007
A Bill to create a statutory offence of participating in preparation to, support for or commission of acts in furtherance of threatening to use or using weapons of indiscriminate mass destruction. He can read the full text at

What mystifies me is why he does'nt support this initiative, rather than muddy the waters and dissipate the anti Trident vote. Perhaps he could tell us.

Richard is at liberty to focus THE WILL of the SCottish people at McConnell - who was once anti-nuclear, like so many labour careerists. This is too big an issue for any party to take our votes. Party's dilute and aggregate the contract between voter and elected reps and have never yet kept true to their side of the bargain enough to merit complete trust - given jostling for positions, trading principle for title and power and so on. No one party will break the union or send Trident sailing to its home (the insecure psycho of the dead British Empire and its dead rotten core, the insecurity of venture capital wealth in the Hell of Greed. This is a battle to wrestle the planet back from Mammons Venal slaves who have poisoned POLITICS and reason for centuries). What Richard is doing wont be liked by the political hacks who want CONTROL - but is democratic expression. Good on you Richard. I am with you all the way. It is the PEOPLE of SCotland who will rid our nation of this insane weapon and people like you will take the lead - real change comes from organic growth in awareness. Not political masters telling us what to think and do.

Should read 'insecure psyche' - by the way, do we really want to wait until there is a major nuclear accident? The explosive power of 750 Hiroshima bombs being accidentally exploding over the clyde? No. We will not wait for our deliverance from political careerist parties of any ilk - clad in the saltire or not. The people will make the changes.
