Falkland Hill: Picture shows parked cars cramming onto country road near beauty spot

A photograph taken at one of Scotland’s popular walking destinations shows multiple parked vehicles blocking a small country road as police warn people to stick to the coronavirus rules.

The image was taken near the Craigmead Car Park at Falkland Hill, also known as East Lomond, in Fife on Sunday, 24 January.

The area is a popular spot for families to go sledging during the winter months.

Officers were called the Lomond Hills at about 3pm to assist with traffic issues due to a surge in parked cars on a road near the beauty spot. Police did not confirm if any fines were issued.

Earlier today, the force issued a warning urging people to follow Covid-19 guidelines after a large number of vehicles were pictured at the Pentland Hills and Portobello.

A police spokesman confirmed the warning applies to other areas including walking destinations in Fife such as Falkland Hill.

The photo has since been shared on Facebook group Fife Jammer Locations where residents appear to be divided over the number of people visiting the popular sledging spot.

One commenter said the quantity of cars is “an absolute joke” while others said visitors are not “breaking the rules” if they are visiting areas within a five mile radius of their homes.

Chief Inspector Scott Richardson said: "While I appreciate people want to make the most of exercising outdoors, I ask that courtesy and respect is shown for the area and its residents. Please be mindful about road access and park responsibly and safely to ensure a clear route is available at all times.

"I fully recognise the impact the restrictions are having on people’s lives. However, it is clear that significant sacrifices are vital to help suppress the spread of coronavirus.

"The Chief Constable has made it clear that our approach throughout the pandemic has not changed. Police Scotland officers will continue to support people to follow the regulations and encourage them to take personal responsibility.

"People should not leave their homes unless for essential purposes and the best way to stay safe is to stay at home.

"We have been carrying out patrols in affected areas to monitor parking, explain the regulations and to encourage people to do the right thing. Where officers encounter wilful breaches they will act decisively to enforce the law."
