Edinburgh youngster to cartwheel around primary school to raise money for Comic Relief

An Edinburgh schoolgirl has raised hundreds of pounds for Comic Relief ahead of a unique cartwheel challenge.

Flora Walker, who is in Primary 2 at Parsons Green Primary School, will attempt to cartwheel around the perimeter of the school today (March 19) – an ambitious challenge which the six-year-old thinks will require around 200 cartwheels.

The ‘avid cartwheeler’ set out to raise £200 for great causes but after launching a JustGiving page, along with making her own promo posters, the active youngster has more than quadrupled her target – with more than £800 having been raised.

Speaking to the Evening News, Flora said: “I think I was about four years old when me and my mum started doing cartwheels together. But it was my dad who came up with the idea for the cartwheel challenge and it's gone quite good - I've gone past my £200 target.

“The money is for people so they can live and get medicine and food. Parsons Green is a lovely school and everyone supports me, and my friends will get to watch me do my challenge. To get ready for it I've been doing handstands against a hard wall, cartwheels and spins in the air.”

Flora’s mum Helen said: “Comic Relief is perfect for her cartwheel challenge because people always do a lot of fun and silly things to raise money – I think there’s over 3,000 people who are doing similar challenges.

“She’s been working really hard to get ready for this – in the living room there’s been a lot of cartwheels, handstands, and jumping off furniture. We’ve also done a dummy run to practice doing a part of it with gloves on because the ground is quite hard. But we think it will be over 200 cartwheels so it’s quite a lot.

“She’s very active, she does loads of sports and she loves a cartwheel. I was shocking at PE and very shy so it’s incredible to see her confidence in her abilities and it’s great her cartwheel challenge will help a good cause.”

Flora’s challenge takes place today - Thursday, March 19. You can support Flora and raise money for Comic Relief by visiting the JustGiving website.
