Worrying footage has emerged of a person wearing dark clothes and bright trainers trying a woman's car door during the early hours in an East Lothian village.

The video shows someone trying the door handle of a local resident's Peugeot 308 in Dury Way, Wallyford, just before 3am on Tuesday.

The resident, Susan, told the Evening News she used a video home surveillance app called Alfred, which enables her to link up an old phone camera to her current phone and monitor activity from her living room window ledge. She says the app detects motion such as night lights or animals and measures the duration of that activity.

The next day, Susan was notified of an anomaly in her surveillance just before 3am on Tuesday morning, when activity lasting for more than five seconds was registered.

She said: "I near enough wet myself when I saw it.

"The way the guy walks on to my driveway like it's nothing, even though a nightlight went on, he just did not care.

"His face is covered but they have a distinctive walk and are wearing bright trainers."

Susan, a full time carer, said her pet dog, Scoobie, woke her up by growling at about 3am on Tuesday after sensing the movement outside as her window was open. But she went back to sleep thinking nothing of it and needed the rest after a long day.

She reported the incident to police and officers are carrying out inquiries.

Susan also alerted neighbours to what happened and suspects the person in the footage had been trying several car door handles in her street that night.

She said footage recorded a few minutes later also showed the person heading off towards an area known locally as 'the drift.'

Susan added: "In this area we all talk to each other and look out for each other, but at the same time you do get a few idiots who come up this way.

"The guy had no fear even though the lights came on. He did not care."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Officers in Musselburgh received reports of a man trying the door of a vehicle parked on Dury Way, Wallyford at around 2.55am on Tuesday, 18 February, 2020.

"Enquires into the incident are ongoing.

"Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 1426 of Tuesday, 18 February."
