Hibs pile the pressure on UEFA rivals Motherwell

Published Date: 08 May 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today turned up the heat on Euro rivals Motherwell by insisting next season's UEFA Cup place is theirs to lose.
The Fir Park outfit remain in pole position to take third place in the SPL table, a point ahead of both Dundee United and Hibs but now with just one game in hand following last night's defeat by Rangers.

Paatelainen was at Ibrox to see Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson score the only goal of the game as Walter Smith's side cut Celtic's advantage in the race for the championship to just four points.

But, while the result didn't, in essence, change the task facing Hibs as they attempt to overhaul Motherwell, Paatelainen declared that simply being involved in the battle for the last European place was a bonus as far as he was concerned.

He said: "We've been given this opportunity by Motherwell and Dundee United. When I became Hibs manager in January I looked at the table and I felt they were so far ahead the possibility of us even to be fighting for third place was maybe out of reach.

"However, two factors have come into play. Motherwell and Dundee United have thrown away so many points and our players have done so well we have been given this chance.

"Motherwell played well last night but Rangers are a strong team, they are going for the title and ground out their win.

"It's not entirely in our hands but I think the pressure is on Motherwell. They have been in pole position, been away from the pack for so long but now the pack has caught them.

"Everyone is looking to overtake them and I believe we have as good a chance as anyone if we can stay unbeaten in our last two matches."

With the first of those games being Celtic in Glasgow on Sunday, Gordon Strachan's side rejuvenated as they find themselves ahead of their arch-rivals although Rangers have two games in hand, Paatelainen conceded that target was "a big ask."

But he pointed out that both Motherwell, who still have Rangers to play again, Aberdeen, who harbour an outside hope of taking third place themselves, and a visit to Easter Road to come, and Dundee United, still to play both sides of the Old Firm, have equally difficult schedules.

He said: "The remaining fixtures for everyone are tricky. But I have to state very clearly, I am not bothered how other teams do.

"If we do our best, play as well as we can and other teams end above us then all credit to them as they will have deserved it. All we can do is look after ourselves and if someone does better than us then we'll aim to finish above them next season."

Paatelainen, meanwhile, hailed the announcement of Steven Fletcher as the Scottish Football Writers' Association young player of the year award – the third Hibs star to earn that accolade in four years – as recognition of the Easter Road outfit's outstanding youth system.

He said: "Steven deserved the award, he has done well this season and been one of our main players.

"But it also tells you a lot about our youth policy. Youngsters know we will give them the chance."

Mixu has done well since taking over but there remain doubts about Hibs· away performances. He may need more time to work on that before a strong Euro bid can be mounted.

If Motherwell win one of the 3 matches left its all over for Hibs and Dundee Utd. However, if Hibs beat Celtic on Sunday and Motherwell don't do better than draw on Saturday then its still wide open. However, I would not put it past Dundee Utd to get a result v Rangers on Saturday, the Gers gaving their eye on Manchester.

Lets preserve the integrity of the league race!!!!

A good response to Mark Mcghee's smug remarks following his team's defeat last night. Mcghee should remember that his team has already benefitted from an extra two home games this season because of the Gretna situation.

The pressure is telling on both Motherwell & Mcghee and it's showing.

Ahh well, what a shame eh? Porty beach for you muppets though... Pray tell how is life in the bottom six? Id get used to it if I was you..

Hurry along wi ye ya nobber....

Back to the actual story though... Big ask still but a bit of hope with Rangers winning last night, Cant honestly see Motherwell beating Rangers & the Aberdeen game will be difficult it could come down to the last game and if its in our own hands (i.e Dundee Utd are out of the running) then I fancy we might just do them at ER.

Dont think we deserve an automatic UEFA place this season based on our performances but then again if we do finish third then obviously our poor season is better than anyone elses efforts...

#4, You've even outdone yourself with this one. When exactly is this Motherwell St Mirren game? Have you been on the sauce already? Or is it just that you are (as previously stated), a total phannie?

#7 - I concur. I don't think we merit a UEFA place based on what has largely been a forgettable season. However, Mixu has it spot on - it's Motherwell's to lose. If they fail to win their remaining two home games (not exactly certainties the way they've been playing), then it could well be settled at Easter Road. Unless of course that horrible Yam Levein comes into the mix.......
10

Number 4.
We realise you are 'just a jambo' but your comment is stupid even by the standards of your fellow fans who are also just Jambos.

When exactly are Motherwell to play St Mirran? I recall that St Mirran were dumped in the bottom 6 playing out meaningless games with the likes of a certain "big" team from gorgie trying as hard as they can to pick up enough points to perhaps overtake Aberdeen but remain in the BOTTOM 6. Whereas Motherwell are playing against the TOP 6 against the likes of a certain team from Leith.
Even if the small team from Edinburgh only make it to Europe through the back door what is it to you? You can never get to Europe with your current manager unless he goes to school to learn the game and even if you did manage to qualify- your pitch is below regulation size. Your squad of 30 tattie pickers from the old eastern block plus the shining world cup stars that never show up would put up a poor showing- especially when the cameras turn to the 65000 seats in Murrayfield that are empty.

Must be great being Just a Jambo eh? Did you get a free scarf yet?

Come back when you have something to talk about like going to Europe or sitting in your 51 million pound stand. Could be a while. Maybe your balls will have dropped by then.

And what's your next observation from on high - "Hibs play in Green" or the classic "If we don't win the Scotish cup next season it will be 107 in a row"

Yip Mixu - motherwell are indeed in front and if they win all their games they will indeed be 3rd - well spotted

ahhhhhhh but we're no interested in "past glories" (if you can call them that....

Lets talk this season lad & let me read you your horoscope eh?

Hearts will finish no higher than 7th this season..... Fact.... Dont matter if you end up with more points than Aberdeen your still bottom six trash...

Hibs will finish no lower than 6th..... Fact.... Hibs may still finish 3rd.... again fact..... Hibs are certain to at least enter european competition via the intertoto cup which is an avenue into the UEFA cup proper for next season only if they fail to achieve automatic qualification for the latter tournament..... again Fact....

Yes Porty beach is ours and its looking quite nice these days so we'd much rather that people like you stay off the sand please.... May I suggest you go and take a gentle jog along the union canal which is about as pollouted as the bile you spout, preferabbly you'll do like most of your players and take a dive into the canal and droon yersel...

On a slightly more humerous note, have any of you Hibees had a shot on the swings in that playground that was in the news recently ?

# 10 - You are obviously a teacher by trade (or tirade). You show admirable patience with the less gifted. But let's give credit.....To acheive what Hearts have achieved this season - increased the debt; insulted fans, SPL and intelligence; managed to miss out on the top 6; undermined the management team; discovered at least 3 conspiracies; etc, etc, is actually quite difficult. Where are Hibs going wrong?

I think you will find outside of the old firm, Hibs and Aberdeen have the joint best home record in the league!

Hardly getting excited about our season, merley tating the fact that we can still qualify for Europe.

It is you who is the twit lad because you believe you can spout off that Herts have had a terrible season (agree) but that we Hibby's think that we have had a great season (wrong), try reading some of the posts eh?

Hibs have had a very poor season, however youse are just shocking...

25

As far as getting third goes I think we blew it against Rangers by not taking them on last 10 mins, that was the period were rangers would be suffering and we didnt do enough!

I fancy motherwell to beat aberdeen on saturday and unless we get something at celtic its all over for us. At the same time a celtic win would ensure the league goes down to the last game, which is a good thing as dundee united play celtic last game.

Totally agree, a number of jambos on here seem to think we are raving about a fantastic season when in actual fact we have had a poor season. We should be miles clear in third, if it wasnt't for that fool John Collins and his team selections and tactics we might well be.

But hopeful of improvement next season, as i said #24, we have joint best home record outside old firm, so thats something to build on.

It really is still to close to call. Even with a game in hand I dont see much advantage to Motherwell. Cant see Hibs getting anything off Celtic, hopefully Rangers and Aberdeen will beat/draw with Motherwell. Dundee Utd will hopefully lose their last two to the OF although if the league is over by the last day who knows who will show up for Celtic.

Then it will all come down to the Hibs Motherwell game at the end of the season!! Sounding a bit like Mixu stating the obvious but I dont think thats unrealistic.

Saying that, Motherwell will prob beat us and it'll all be for nothing!!

Actually we are both wrong. My statement was based on the assumption that Hibs would not beat Celtic on Sunday but I did not expain that.

Motherwell have 53 points with 3 games to play. v Aberdeen, Rangers & Hibs. Thus maximum points possible = 62.

Hibs have 52 points with 2 games to play. v Celtic and Motherwell. Maximum points possible = 58.

So 4 more points for Motherwell (say 3 against Aberdeen and 1 against Rangers) would give them 57 points. Hibs would thus have to beat Celtic and beat Motherwell to obtain 58 points. A draw with Celtic but a win over Motherwell would only give Hibs 56 points.

My prediction?

Motherwell will take one point out of their next 2 games and lose to Hibs. = 54 points.

Hibs will lose to Celtic and beat Motherwell. = 55 points.

Dundee Utd will get one more point = 53 points.

Aberdeen will get one more point = 51 points.

Rangers will narrowly win the SPL.

Really impressive display from the Hearts Youth Players.

They didn't even bother to stay on the park long enough to see the Hibees lift the shield.

Only SEVEN players from Hearts had the good sportsmanship to applaud their opponents. Not one of the coaching staff hung around either. What a disgrace.

I wouldn't let my under 12's team display that sort of petulant crap. Utter disgrace
