AROUND 150 Midlothian Council employees have started a "work to rule" protest over new contracts which they claim will lead to a cut in wages and poorer working conditions.
The employees also staged an "unofficial strike" outside the local authority's Dalkeith headquarters last week.

Following a meeting with senior council officials, shop stewards called on the employees to carry out a work to rule leaving no extra cover from 4pm-7.30am.

Mike Rush, Unison Midlothian's service and conditions officer, said the protest was the members' response to the latest contracts being offered by the council as part of its Modernising Midlothian equal pay scheme. Employees have been offered the chance to sign up to the new contracts, or be served with 12 weeks' notice.

A Midlothian Council spokesperson told employees: "The council has made an offer of employment based on the proposed contractual changes and asked you if you would like to voluntarily accept these changes."

No cover from 4pm to 7.45 am !!! as a ex employee of midlothian council can i point out that as far as the employees of Midlothian council are concernd those hours in the day just dont exist!!!

Ihave been present when council officials have refused point blank to tackle problems outside office hours even to the extent that it is deemed permissable to allow used needles lie in public parks etc till the following day.

Council workers with made up jobs sabre rattling. It's a bit like worrying if Llamas agree with Christmas! Who cares !

These people should consider themselves lucky to be in jobs if the average calibre of them is anything to go by. If you replaced these 150 people with 4 monkeys you'd probably get better service and a cut in council tax to boot.

The Unions are again just taking the taxpayer to the cleaners for the benefit of themselves and their useless members.

Fire the lot of them and get rid of the unions once and for all !!

Equal pay for equal effort and results. To hell with equal pay just because you are there.

Midlothian and Edinburgh Councils pay well below the salaries paid by East Lothian.

Equal pay should mean equality across all scottish councils ,but this is not happening as this has to be settled locally.in Midlothian their are low paid women who are losing money too school cooks. cleaners.Im a winner my pays going up to 7.40 an hour.thats after 27 years service,in dirty often freezing and wet condition< il be lucky to reach retirement. not many people left in this job after 55.

What does "work to rule" mean? That they do the bare minimum? I thought they did that anyway.
