AN OUTBREAK of a rare salmonella strain which hit three people in the Lothians has been linked to a food manufacturer in Ireland.
A multi-agency investigation is probing a food farm in County Kildare after reports of the Salmonella Agona bug came in from across the country.

Health Protection Scotland said information gathered by the Food Standards Agency Ireland showed Dawn Farm Foods Ltd supplied the Subway sandwich chain with a contaminated beef product.

The FSAI went on to say Subway had since removed this product from sale.

Figures obtained by the Evening News revealed that, of the 24 people across Scotland affected since June, only a small proportion were in the NHS Lothian area.

Most cases affect young and middle-aged people, and of the 24 affected, only five were admitted to hospital, and none of them were deemed to be seriously ill.
