PLANS to rebuild Meadowbank Stadium have been branded "unnecessary" by the leader of the Scottish Green Party.
Robin Harper MSP, who represents the Lothians, criticised the decision to sell some of the land and called on the city council to rethink the controversial plan.
He said the proposal to bulldoze the entire site and replace it with a far smaller sports centre was "an unnecessary rebuild".
He pledged to do everything he could to help campaigners save the iconic landmark.
He said: "The sale of public land to developers without any reimbursement of the public purse, indeed with the negative impact of a reduction in public space and assets, is unsustainable and entirely unsupportable.
"I am entirely opposed to the piece-by-piece sale of public land to fund an unnecessary rebuild.
"The city should robustly demand sufficient funding for the pool refurb, which is driven by Commonwealth Games need, and should not be so easily persuaded to part with its iconic stadium."
