Meadowbank plan is slammed again

MEADOWBANK'S local community council has criticised plans to scale down the stadium and sell most of the site for housing.
Craigentinny and Meadowbank community councillors say local people will suffer through the loss of two thirds of their facilities.

They say Edinburgh City Council has failed to take their views into account or carry out enough consultation.

Ch
airman Giacomo Modica called on the council to listen to the public at a meeting this week.

He said: "Edinburgh City Council's decision is completely at odds with what the public want. It will mean the loss of almost two thirds of the existing facilities. We need more facilities, not less."

"No community council has been contacted. Our last involvement was the series of summer workshops which produced a report that reflected only the chairman's view, not the view of the vast majority of members."

He praised the local Lib Dem councillor Gary Peacock for voting against his party, and he called on other councillors to reconsider their decision. The meeting also gave its full backing to the Save Meadowbank campaign.

"We welcome this support and the many positive suggestions that were made at the meeting," said campaign spokesman Aaron Lowe.

#1 the deal's done and the brown envelopes delivered
Hopefully not.
Wouldn't the council be better off saying if Meadowbank needs money spent on it,over the next how many years we'll upgrade it and spend the necessary money on it rather than spending the money knocking it down and selling off bits of it? If they can only afford to spend a part of that amount on it now then spend that on Meadowbank and call it part 1 investment. Part 2 still to follow.

#2 You mean a sort of halfway house Meadowbank ? a lick of paint and say we've invested in facilities even though it doesn't meet modern day standards ?

Sorry, that would be worse than the current shoddy compromise that satisfies no-one.

No. The council should say that they are prepared to spend the necessary money on upgrading Meadowbank over the longer term. They have said that they can only afford a fraction of the cost of upgrading it at the moment. They should say that over the longer term they are prepared to spend more money maintaining it. You've got the facilities there. The council should spend money each year maintaining/upgrading Meadowbank as required. It could be over a set period say 10 years the council could completely upgrade Meadowbank. What do you do year one to improve it? What do you do year two to improve it etc.?

Also things like the bus routes that go past the building. Can these be improved to make it easier for people to get to Meadowbank? The train line goes past Meadowbank. Can a railway station be put in there to make it easier for people to go to and from Meadowbank?

Meadowbank is already well linked by buses, and it is already well used - it is difficult to book halls because it is so busy.
The problem is the t0ssers in the council who have no bottle, and are still gripped by the great Property bubble. They think selling the land will get them out of this hole that they have created for themselves by decades of underfunding.
I hope there is a property crash to put this to an end once and for all.
It may be the only way to stop these muppets we unfortunately have in control.

The council needs to spend the necessary money to maintain/upgrade the facilities that are there. If need be then the facilities at Meadowbank need to be expanded. Why don't they ringfence the income from Meadowbank towards the cost of part of the upgrade?

#6,

Yes, some of what you say is correct. But at the end of the day, they need around £20m to upgrade it to a proper international standard. The issue here is whether to do it properly and sell off some of the land or whether to do it piece meal and never really get there.

There is of course a third option which those that shout loudest want but are not so forthcoming with a funding solution. That is, do it properly and spend the £20m. But where's the money going to come from?

Hmm, I can only see the comments, not the article.

Nobody is asking for international standard. I think we should build houses on Princes Street gardens cause where is the money going to come from to keep it?
