THE future of Meadowbank Stadium and the Royal Commonwealth Pool is to hang in the balance for several more weeks amid fears over the huge costs involved in revamping both facilities.
Council officials have said they need more time to come up with a series of options mapping out how to either refurbish the ageing athletics arena, or help pay for new facilities on the existing site by selling off part of it for housing.

Some £75,000 has been spent ordering fresh surveys and commissioning new research on both facilities over the last two months.

It is understood the officials have been sent back to the drawing board amid concerns that estimates for revamping the current facilities at Meadowbank - priced at almost £40 million by consultants - are too high.

They are also still trying to work out how to fill a £16m funding black hole over the long-awaited plans to revamp the Royal Commonwealth Pool. There are concerns that selling off a portion of the Meadowbank site may be nowhere near enough to ensure the pool revamp goes ahead with enough left over for major new facilities at Meadowbank.

Deputy council leader Steve Cardownie said: "We have asked for more work to be done as a number of questions remained unanswered and we wanted to ensure that all the analysis that is done is robust.

"It might mean a slight delay but it is absolutely crucial that we get things right for the city.

"We need to let people see what our options are and how they could potentially be paid for."

Glasgow is relying on Edinburgh providing the revamped "Commie Pool" by 2014 as part of its bid for the Commonwealth Games that year.

However, the delays on the pool project, the cost of which has already soared by £7m in the space of two years, mean the future of the RCP will be far from certain when Glasgow discovers if it has won the Games on November 9.

The crucial council meeting to discuss both facilities will not be held until the end of that month.

In a report published today, council chief executive Tom Aitchison says: "Whilst I am pleased to report that much of the survey work has been completed, I require further time to analyse the findings in order to be able to bring a comprehensive report back to the council in November."

One council source said: "There is a degree of scepticism that the estimates for refurbishing the existing site at Meadowbank have been over exaggerated.

"There is no appetite for this option among the council officials, but unfortunately for them, that is the number one priority for the campaign group.

"But if there is no sell-off of land at Meadowbank there will simply be no money for any new facilities there, and the refurbishment of the Commie Pool will also be in serious doubt."

Alex

Stupid ignorant comments like yours just encourage an idiotic council to bulldoze over sporting facilities enjoyed by thousands.
Away an bury yer heid.

with less then a month to go for the Commonwealth Games decision Glasgow 2014 clearly has it's pants down around its Ankles . If the Glasgow committee is so dependent on the Commie Pool you would think they would have coffed up the money by now.
The Problem is going to be resolved when Abuja wins the right to host the commonwealth games. I do not understand why tollcross is not redone to having diving as well as swim racing but of course the game of the game here is Load Sharing Because Tollcross certainly has the room for expansion and even have a pool that has springboard diving. The Bid from Scotland is built on such a house of cards that it is laffable.
Abuja meanwhile has their outdoor aquatics centre fully ready on the ground today having last done a Fina approved event in 2003.
When a First minister of scotland is looking gather support from local muslims for the Scotland 2014 bid
you know it is going Abuja's way.

Close them both and *if* there really is demand then let the private sector build new facilities funded by ticket sales.

There are a number of unanswered questions I wish to draw attention to:

1. Why do council officials "need more time" to pursue options?

2. How did the "consultants" arrive at the figure of £40 million?

3. Just exactly who is Steve Cardownie?

4. What role, if any, did Princess Diana have in this affair?

5. Late one night I saw a young man release a large canvas bag containing several hundred frogs near just outside the emergency exit doors of the "Commie Pool". Who is he, and why did he do this?

6. Is this Argos Christmas catalogue out yet?

7. Why do I keep hearing all these voices in my head?

What I want to know is what is actually happening here , and over there.

Can we also cancel christmas as its just a pain in the backside really.

Seriuosly though , complete financial mis management by these clowns. At the moment a city of half a million has seriously run down facilities - and it seems no way to fund them.

Stop the job creation schemes at the council.

If the revamp is going to cost £40 million, can we no just have the £50 million underspend they've promised on the tram (singular).

That still leaves £10 million for cooncillors free lunches.

Maybe they should ask the tram people for a fully costed budget that's going to make savings, be delivered on time and not go up at all....

The council just saved £45m off the cost of the trams yesterday - doesn't that mean they've got the money for the redevelopment ?

11. - I'm serious. Please don't treat my questions with such frivolity.

Why would someone release a canvas bag full of frogs just outside the stadium?

And this Diana thing - I smell a conspiracy. Actually I smell a lot of things (many of which aren't very pleasant) but I know a conspiracy when I smell one and I'm smelling one right now.

Easy solution to keep both sides happy.

Build a new stadium and let the homeless Jakes sleep in the chairs and camp on the grass, It'll be like one big T(ramp)-in-the-park.

why is it that there is not a hue and cry in Scotland that a commonwealth games bid has to have financial support from Edinburgh city council that then has to apparently sell off a 1986 commonwealth games legacy?
In Halifax the games opponents would have been all over this if it was the case with nova scotia .
To me it looks like a bid built on a financial house of cards . 16 million short here 10 million short for TV rights the proposed national arena triples in estimate cost . Smells like Preteen Spirit London to ME AKA London 2012 cost overruns.
