Council-backed magazines 'being used as political tool'

SENIOR administration councillors are facing a probe amid allegations they are using publicly-funded magazines for political ends.
A formal complaint has been lodged with Edinburgh's most senior official, chief executive Tom Aitchison, after at least four internal magazines featured photographs of Lib Dem councillors, including leader Jenny Dawe.

Labour councillor Andrew Burn
s has now accused the group of using the internal City News magazine as a promotional tool for the political party.

The charge was today dismissed by Councillor Dawe, but Councillor Burns – who was both transport and education leader during the previous administration – insisted: "

It seems different standards are now being applied."

Under the previous administration, Cllr Burns said council photographers always took pictures both with and without politicians, and care was taken to ensure snaps of then-council leaders Donald Anderson or Ewan Aitken rarely – if ever – appeared in official publications.

The Fountainbridge/Craiglockhart councillor has promised to donate £500 to the charity of choice of the current Lord Provost, if anyone can find a departmental council publication between May 1999 and May 2007 with eight or more pictures of then-administration politicians.

The latest edition of Involve, a publicly-funded magazine distributed to more than 4000 social workers, home helps and other care staff, is said to contain eight pictures of Lib Dem councillors – three of leader Jenny Dawe, two each of health and social care chief Paul Edie and Lord Provost George Grubb, and one of education leader Marilyne MacLaren.

A previous edition attacked criticism after featuring six different pictures of Cllr Edie. The current edition of City News is also said to carry a picture of an administration councillor – this time the Lord Provost – while the previous edition, obtained by the Evening News, has a large picture of Jenny Dawe, alongside Location, Location, Location presenters Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp.

But Cllr Dawe said today: "To suggest that we are using council publications for political purposes is absolute nonsense."

A council spokeswoman added: "The council newspaper Outlook's policy is to not to include pictures or quotations from councillors except on occasions when this would be deemed public information. Staff newsletters are different and there may be occasions where it is appropriate."

Anyone who doesn't see something seriously wrong in a Council having a newspaper, should have there balls or eggs removed.

I couldn't get past the first page of the gut wrenching social conditioning propaganda.

Truly sick.

We get a similar document - posted by our Glorious Cooncil and filled with smiling, typically obese senior officials smiling as they hand over cheques or suchlike.
As with similar unsolicited mail, this stuff usually goes straight into the round, metal file.
I don't know, perhaps the various councils around Scotland will have heard of this new fangled thing, the internet, where they can publish this sort of stuff. They then can tell us proudly how much they have saved in paper and postage!
I would imagine most people receive this, curse about council waste, then chuck it in the recycling.
Who cares what they do? Perhaps a newsletter with info on this months best "waste of taxpayers cash" would be more of a winner with the voters?

From a man who appeared so many times in the last one it's a bit pot , kettle & black.

Labour used it as a propoganda tool to highlight lesley hinds and her cronies for self promotion purposes. Whilst it maintains everything is wonderful when our comunities are clearly not!

Do you think Labour in Edinburgh are throwing at the co alition exactly all the things they did in office in the hope traditions are still being upheld?

The Fountainbridge/Craiglockhart councillor has promised to donate £500 .... with eight or more pictures of then-administration politicians.

eight or more, so is 7 OK.

So has Cllr Burns never appeared in any Council Publication....saying how wonderful the Council is doing.

A Council Newspaper by its nature surely will/must contain "political" input. thats the very nature of local government

It would be wrong to SAY "vote labour"

I have had comments published in the press highlighting the constant pics appearing of the same old wearysome coonsillors;why ? In case we pass them by in the street?
In this instance it is up to the pic editors and senior editors to be more cicumspect- more down right choosey

Mine isn't even delivered to the door. They are dumped in a pile half way up the first stair where they are a fire hazard, a litter hazard and a trip hazard. I 'phoned the council and was told that I could deliver then myself. Mabye I could get the council litter wardens to fine the Council.

As an explanation of how the Council performs its functions; useless. However, if one folds the paper one inch in from the longer edge, it fits perfectly into a standard-sized rabbit hutch.
An apposite recycling.

Magazines, community newspapers, local business centres. All they ever seemed to do was promote stuff from which ever councillor / party was in power. And for the last 20 years that meant Labour.

Why not save taxpayers money and kill off all this trite propaganda?

If political parties want to sing their own praises let them pay for the performance and distribution.

For goodness sake, who else but the ruling cooncillors would appear in these publications anyway? I see the same things in Stirling Copuncil and Lanarkshire as well as in Perth and Kinross and Dundee so for goodness sake gie's a break?

Labour would have never inserted a photo of themselves in a staff magazine. They would have inserted numerous photos and articles in unionist media and paid them ten of thousands of pounds to circulate them widely.

So typical of the LibDems. Even when they try to emulate the Labour Parody, they still can't do it right.

Will the Labour appointed Electorial Commission investigate all the past Labour Coonci's public magazines along with Labour's other expensesk such as Cooncil resources and Cooncil workers?

Can we see artists impressions soon in this of historic buildings vandalised to attach fixings for trams, in order to prune a few millions off the budget.

Or perhaps estate agent type adverts of the land and building council selling off to pay for the tram line.

I can understand Labour's concern about this. When Labour were in charge it was OK but now that they only control four councils in Scotland it is clearly unfair to hand this type of advantage to other parties.

Can I suggest a compromise, let Nicol Stephen have the lead article in the next one, he is so unpopular in Scotland at the minute that the Liberals will be decimated if the public ever find out he is leader of the Liberals.
