Published Date: 20 July 2009
THE Evening News is calling for courageous firefighter Ewan Williamson to be honoured with a medal from the Queen.
The 35-year-old died while fighting a fire in a city pub, becoming the first Lothian firefighter in living memory to die while tackling a blaze.

The campaign to have his bravery officially recognised by being posthumously awarded the Queen's Gall
antry Medal has already been backed by his friends and colleagues and local politicians.

The Queen's Gallantry Medal is awarded by the Queen for acts of great bravery by citizens including firefighters and police officers, and occasionally serving military personnel.

Support this 1000%. any person that risks their lives to save others should be awarded. to everyone he was a brave man but to him he was just doing his job.

love2moan,

21/07/2009 12:45:47
full support for this cause, father has been a fire fighter since before I was born and can't begin to imagine how the family feel. Risks have always and always will be there but the teams do their job with no regard for their own safety, just to save others.

Shame it has taken a tragic disaster for people to realise the sacrifices made and risks taken every day by our brave emergency services, but at least Ewan will get the honour he deserves.

The ultimate sacrifice while helping others. There shouldn't have to be a petition for the Gallantry medal! it should already be on it's way.

100% behind Ewan Williamson receiving the queens gallantry medal, my thoughts are with his girlfriend, family, friends and collegues and this tragedy has really touched everyone i know my dad is a firefighter and when i heard of this i was very saddened. This man was fighting for lives and his family should receive this medal on behalf of this brave man there should not have to be any petition.
17

Call me cynical, but,.........,

Edinburgh 21/07/2009 16:53:06
100% behind this campaign as it would be a fitting tribute to a guy, who by all accounts was a really great person and who made the ultmiate sacrifice whilst trying to help others. It would also be a way of showing recognition and thanks for the efforts of all those who attended this tragic incident, and who regularly risk their lives to help others.

Dalry, 21/07/2009 17:28:07
I respectfully and sincerely add my name to any formal and written request to Her Majesty for the grant of the Queen's Gallantry Medal (Posthumously) to Fireman Ewan Williamson, for devotion to duty, at the cost of his life, while a member of Lothians and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, whereby some twenty lives were saved from a serious conflagration.

Fireman Williamson was a courageous and professional member of the service, who did not hesitate or delay - he (and his colleagues) served the citizens of his community so, so well.

His conduct during the event, and his untimely death to save others should, be acknowledged in this way and his memory treaured by his family, colleagues and friends and citizens of the city, as being the highest traditions of public service.

May he rest in honoured peace. We should care for and honour his family.

The Queen's Gallantry medal would be a fitting award for a true hero. But for the selfless actions of Ewan and the other firefighters on duty that night many more lives could have been lost.
Ewan will be missed by many for a long time to come. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

I wholly support this campaign. While he died a hero, he was also a loving son, brother, partner and best mate that wasn't supposed to die at his age...Such a tragic waste of life .. He absolutely deserves to be honoured ... maybe in time it will give his family and friends some comfort... I'm just glad I had the pleasure of knowing him ...
41

Highland Hibby,

Inverness 22/07/2009 16:47:50
I remember being told when I was a boy that Edinburgh hadn't lost a man at a fire for an awful long time. I wish that was still true today.

In a day when we use 'hero' to mean our favourite sportsman it's sobering to be reminded what heroism really is and really means. What else can I do but support the campaign?

Thank you Ewan. You'll never be forgotten.
42

Paul Graham,

There is no greater sacrifice that a man can make than to lay down his life for his fellow man.

Firefighter Williamson gave his life that others may live.

I would expect that the very least we could do is honour his memory and his actions by the posthumous award of a Queens Galantry Medal.

44

Starkravingsane,

Edinburgh 22/07/2009 19:03:06
Absolutely. More recognition should be given to the real heros in our society, like this brave man, and much, much less to those who can remember lines or kick a ball well.

This shouldn't even be up for debate - can only add to everyones comments - Ewan was a very very special person - it's not just about what he did on the night of the fire but who he was as a person - he gave so much the least we can do is give him this medal a lasting tribute for his family, Lynsey and all the many friends and colleagues. 15000 people were reported to be there standing in the torrential rain on Wednesday surely it goes to show what a true 'HERO' he was and is - Dot & Hunts xx

84

PmCook,

edinburgh 05/08/2009 05:31:08
Eh, Jeannie with the lightbrown hair, i think you should change your name to jeannie with no brains... your totaly missing the point, its exactly because of the risks that comes with the job that he is a hero, just like the other men and women who put there lifes on the line to save others are, if you ever have the chance to ask anyone saved by a fireman to remind you why they are heros am sure they will tell you in no uncertian terms why, lets just hope you dont ever need to call them out to save you someday.

I knew ewan, he was a friend of my brother in laws and he was one of the most genuine guys i have ever met, he deserves this medal !
85

Rudeboy 1233,

Edinburgh 05/08/2009 14:57:16
Thank you PmCook - I knew Ewan very well

Jeannie - why have you bothered to write this on a petition, you show a total disrespect. Yes he was killed doing a job, a job that is not recognised enough and when a death like this happens people want to show their respect to the selflesh act that firefighters do on a daily basis whilst people like you are lying in their beds safe and sound. Would you walk into a burning building to save people...somehow I think not. If you have nothing to say.....DONT!
86

JasperJ,

05/08/2009 15:20:13
Well Said PmCook and Rudeboy.

Jeannie "with the light brown hair" - I have met some DUMB people in my life, but that comment takes the biscuit! You clearly have no idea what these Fire Fighters do, for very little in return! A risk that runs with their duty....err Ewan was the first to die in L&B's Fire Service in their 187 year history! This is a petition to honour Ewan so I won't carry on.....other than to suggest you stop sniffing drugs, your hair might stop getting lighter and you may come back to reality!
87

Rudeboy 1233,

Edinburgh 06/08/2009 11:35:11
I fully support this petition, although it is my opinion that we should not need one for Ewan to get the recognition he fully deserves. One of life's good guy's, Ewan you are unreplaceable, I will miss you forever. Keep looking out for me. Love Always xx
88

Vicky Coia,

Jeannie with the light brown hair should change her name to jeannie the stupid mare. Jeannie look up hero in the dictionary that is if you can read and see the definition for yourself. Ewan was my best friend and wonderful uncle, brother, son and boyfriend these alone make him special beyond words. What he did that night was trying to save lives, doing a job I know he was great at and proud of. Support this petition whole heartedly
Loving you always Ewan x
89

The real dracula,

07/08/2009 18:46:55
Absolutely if people cannot see that it takes a special sort of person to join the emergency services , knowing that their job could be very dangerous , then they are not only blind but stupid too. I sense a bit of jealousy , I would hazard a guess that the folk that cannot see that he was a hero are either in a boring mundane job or unemployed and are deeply resentful that others have the bravery and the courage that these complainers are completely lacking.
Can I take it then that the complainers are willing to NOT be rescued by the emergency services , if they dont think they are brave then they will have no need for their services ,,,,,yes ???
As has been said before in the event of a fire , firefighters are running towards danger while the rest of us run away , if thats not bravery I dont know what is.
I cant believe the bunch of whiney, saddos and disgruntled cowards that have posted on here. They need to get a life and a perspective.
Give him a medal , it shouldnt even need debate.

I hope that the medal has already been awarded to Ewan by now. 100% support. A brave man through and through. A gem. My thoughts have been with him, his family and friends.

I support the effort to award Ewan Williamson the Queen's Gallantry Medal. The medal would not only recognize his heroic bravery, but would recognize all Fire Fighters that risk their lives every day on our behalf. Ewan lived his life in a very positive way; he was a great role model and unselfish. He would do anything to help a friend or a stranger. His smile and personality would light up a room. He loved his job and loved his mates at Tollcross; we would do anything for them. I can't think of one single reason why they would not award him this very fitting medal of bravery. Ewan, we miss you very much, life is not the same without you.

I just came on here to see how the petition was doing and feel sickened after reading No 84 'Jeannie with the lightbrown hair'. Your comments are unfounded, unwelcome, insensitive and completely disrespectful. In addition, this is a 'petition' not a platform for 'debate' (look up in the dictionary)! Thanks to all who put this 'person' in their place already.

Once again, I 100% back this call to award Ewan with the Queens Gallantry medal.

RIP Ewan.

#93 - and 93 comments from a population of around 800,000 - lets face it its just a job, and one of the least riskiest in the UK today

Whilst you are entitled to your opinion, I do hope you feel better using a petition forum to post your ignorant attitude.
Shame on you!

Ewan was a great guy always happy & smiling, fun to be around & a great Basketball player.

It came as a big shock hearing he'd passed away.

Someone who dies saving others should always be honoured in my opinion.

Sending much Love & Support to the family & Friends.

Remembering his smile makes me smile thanks Ewan :)

krusty the clown #94 - how apt your name is - this is the online petition, people all over edinburgh are signing paper copies but being a klown in every sense of the word you won't know this. My husband and I have collected 500 bewtween two of us at our works! Your comments are disrespectful, hurtful and above all best kept to yourself - this IS a petition not "give us your opinion corner" so don't bother sharing your rubbish.

I'm really saddened by some of the insensitive and frankly stupid comments that have been written on the various articles about Ewan.
After I'd heard that Ewan had joined the fire service, I went along to a recruitment day myself. Seeing first hand the reality of what fire men and women do so willingly is astounding, and made me appreciate that although we shared the same genes, I'm not quite as brave as my big cousin!
There is no question for me that Ewan deserves to be honoured, and the work that these amazing and brave people do should be recognised; not criticised.
I'm so proud of him. xxxxx

If you cant think of any thing nice to say then please keep it to your self! He was a special person to many and they should be aloud to be helped by the nice words people have to say about him!! Obviously jennie is a bit like the tin man and comments like that wouldnt hurt her.. SUPPORT THIS 1000%

Its a dangerous job, not many people would go into a burning building, but Ewan did, and he paid the ultimate price.

A medal would be a lasting tribute for him and other firefighters in recognition of the risks they take to help others.

To read this article and the many comments brings a tear to my eye. I was one of the residents rescued that night by a very brave firefighter and his colleagues. I was devastated to hear of the death Of Ewan Williamson but I will be eternally grateful for his and his many colleagues selfless bravery that night that allowed me to walk away unharmed. I am glad we have such courageous people willing to do such a hard job. Without question I support this campaign to honour Euan's bravery. My thoughts are with his family who should be comforted in the knowledge that he was a hero. X
