A NEW chimpanzee enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo has scooped two prestigious awards.
The state-of-the-art Budongo Trail, which opened this year, was named Best New Zoo Enclosure and Best Education Project.

It was honoured by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria, which recognises outstanding contributions and achie
vements in wildlife conservation, animal welfare and husbandry, research and education.

The specialised enclosure can house up to 40 chimpanzees, with three "living pods" of varying temperature and layout, as well as an extensive outdoor climbing frame. It is also a major centre of chimpanzee research.

The zoo is working with the Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda to study endangered chimpanzees.

Chief executive David Windmill said: "We believe it is a ground-breaking enclosure that takes chimpanzee welfare to another level, and allows us to give visitors of all ages the opportunity to learn more about our closest relatives and the global issues threatening their survival.

"We hope that visitors recognise that, by visiting the Budongo Trail at the Zoo, they are not only visiting a wildlife attraction, but they are in effect supporting the conservation and research of chimpanzees in the wild."

#1 - chica - We have more that our fair share of nutters in Edinburgh, so we don't really need the views of a tofu-eating Manc.

I haven't seen this Budongo Trail attraction yet. Does it feature a Typhoo-style chimps tea party?

#3 I eat meat, i would kill an animal for its meat, but zoo's are prisons, sad places for the animals in there.

You don't have to be a hardcore eco-activist to realise that most large animals in zoos are utterly miserable. Anyone who has seen the polar bears going round in round their tiny area in tiny circles just like prisoners in solitary confinement would have to be incredibly hard-hearted not to pity the torture they're enduring, when their natural territory is measured in hundreds of square miles. Ditto the big cats etc. And yes, ditto the chimps. Commentators 2 & 3 above should be ashamed of themselves, being more keen to score points against anyone demonstrating an ounce of compassion rather than the nasty selfishness which characterises these columns so often. Just disgusting.

Why not use Eddie Price's Garage as an extension to the Trail?

Foo,

That's a rather odd assumption...that everyone who lives in the west is guilty of this planet's destruction. I suppose your statement implies that anyone who pollutes, no matter how small, is guilty. Is that how you justify your no doubt high polluting lifestyle?
