PARKING attendants in the Capital today vowed to step up their strike action to two days a week as part of the ongoing pay dispute.
The city's enforcers yesterday took part in a second 24-hour walkout in response to employer NSL freezing pay at £7.09 an hour – an annual wage of around £14,500.

Union leaders today said there were plans for further strikes in the coming weeks if
the employer did not get back round the negotiating table.

The company is understood to have been bringing staff up from Preston to maintain a presence in the Capital during the strike.

After the first strike last month it emerged that hundreds of drivers escaped fines, with only a fraction of the normal number of tickets issued.

The council said just 31 fixed penalty notices were imposed during the first walkout, compared with a daily average of 600.

Rob Stewart, Unite's regional industrial officer, said staff would consider striking a number of times a week.

He said: "There's still a real resolve to take this on. We are looking at making further approaches to the company to see if they are ready to make an offer. But if not, we will make the strikes a bit more frequent, possibly two a week.

He said union officials were considering dragging out strikes across a two-day period from 1pm to 1pm to put more pressure on the employer.

"It would have more of an impact because if they are bringing up people from down south they would have to do so over two days."

Tim Cowen, a spokesman for NSL, said that a reverse to the pay freeze was impossible, but said: "I'm baffled to hear them say that we won't go back to the table. We've had a very good offer on the table for sometime regarding improved terms and conditions. We think it's a very good offer and will result probably for most of them in improved take-home pay. We'd be very happy to talk to them if they would give us a bell."

He added: "Everybody who works at NSL has had a pay freeze this year. Maybe 75 per cent of businesses across the country are doing this at the moment – these are challenging economic times and we have to be careful that we run our business in a cost-effective manner. We didn't take this decision lightly."

Mr Cowen said the company had put office staff on to street patrols and had drafted in attendants from elsewhere in the country to cover the strike.

City council transport convener Gordon Mackenzie, said: "As with the previous strike action, NSL's contingency plans have worked well and steady traffic flow has been maintained throughout the day."

1. "... nobody will miss them..."? One of the stupidist comments of the week, exceeding this dimwit's usual lows.

If the enforcers didn't do their job, the town would come to a complete standstill. Only the thickest of thickheads wouldn't realise this. Self-regarding idiocy it seems has no limit.

If you don't want a ticket, don't break the law. Simple.

They should go on strike everyday of the week if they really want to make a point!

Enforcers from Preston will have to learn that there is a difference with Blue Badge parking in Scotland.
South of the border reqires a time clock to be shown alongside the badge if outside a disabled parking place with a maximum time limit of 3 hours. This rule doesn't apply in Scotland where they don't even issue a time clock. Stand by for a shoal of appeals against wrongly issued tickets.

The wardens make so much money for the city council they deserve a huge wage rise. And when is the council going to ban people from parking in bus lanes and on the Bridges on a Sunday - it causes travel chaos? Only in Edinburgh........

well said #9, there are many parking laws in Scotland that don't apply in England.

#4 Little Hitlers,

I'm no great fan of traffic wardens but 14.5k a year for what they do is pretty poor. This is well below the average wage in Edinburgh.

On saying that only those who can demonstrate they're doing a much better job deserve a wage rise in the current climate. Why should people automatically get more pay when we have deflation.

The ayrshire bard makes an interesting point regarding blue badge holders. The fact that there are different rules for usng a blue badge in England compared to Scotland actually makes a mockery of the fact Scotland is meant to be part of a United Kingdom. It should be noted the blue badge system was introduced to help people with disabilities and give them concessions on parking but as usual others have sought to abuse the system by illegal useage of the badges.Take a walk around many of the city centre streets and you will see parking bays and yellow lines festooned by motor vehicles displaying Blue Badges and I can guarantee not every single one is being used in accordance with the rules.

Now back to the striking Civil Enforcement Officers to give them their correct title.Their company which has gone through a number of name changes in recent times and is now known as NSL Services Group(enforcement Solutions)have implemented a pay freeze across the board which they say was the preferred option to retain jobs rather than cut jobs if they were to offer a pay rise.

This seems to be a growing trend with major companies to name but a few....Honda,BT,Virgin Atlantic,British Airways. They all site the same reasons for taking such actions, accept a pay freeze or indeed a pay cut or face jobs being lost due to the "credit crunch"

I personally feel that some companies are jumping on a bandwagon to the detriment of hardworking low paid workers whilst those at the top of the tree suffer little financial pain in comparison.

Instead of striking the way to get their point over is to simply "work to rule" and withdraw their goodwill by going in early to prepare for the days shift.

An early shift starts at 08:00am,now does that mean you walk through the door at 08:00am and then draw out your equipment and by the time you have done so it will be around 08:15am before everyone is ready for their daily briefing or do

They are worth every penny, wish they were in East Lothian as well as the wardens here seem to miss an awful lot. If people parked properly there would be no need for the wardens!
