ROCK band Kasabian have been unveiled as the headline act for this year's Hogmanay Concert in Princes Street Gardens.
The chart-topping indie group will be joined by Edinburgh rockers Idlewild, with organisers saying they want to give the event a "harder edge" .

A capacity crowd of 8500 is expected to watch the bands perform in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle.

Kasabian, who were formed in Leicester, have been pulling in crowds across the country after seeing their last album shoot straight to number one in the charts. The group also played the Corn Exchange last year as part of the T on the Fringe programme.

Lead singer Tom Meighan said today: "It is an honour to be asked to play Hogmanay this year. Scotland is always a special place to play and New Year's Eve will be even more special. We promise."

Idlewild, formed in 1995, are no strangers to playing at major events, having performed in Princes Street Gardens at the launch of the Scottish Parliament back in 1999. Organisers said they had been keen to book the band for a number of years. Their greatest hits album is currently one of the most popular in the country.

Pete Irvine, director of Edinburgh's Hogmanay producer Unique Events, said he was very pleased with the line-up.

"We've altered the formula a bit from previous years, as the concert has always been geared towards a family event and this year we want to give it a bit more of a harder edge, so there's no question the gardens will rock.

"For families, we're putting together a major new event in the Hogmanay programme, and we will hopefully be able to announce all the details of that in a couple of weeks."

Previous years have seen sell-out crowds enjoy performances by Moby, Blondie, Scissor Sisters, Texas, KT Tunstall and El Presidente. The rest of the concert line-up, along with the other artists who will be performing at the Ceilidh in the Gardens and Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party, will be announced in coming days.

Tickets for the Concert in the Gardens, which include an Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party pass, go on-sale tomorrow from the event's box office at Ticket Scotland on Rose Street, and online at www.edinburghshogmanay.com. Tickets are limited to four per person.

who cares. It will probably pi** down with rain/sleet and get cancelled anyway. As far as I'm concerned it was always a damp squid (like the pun). It was always about tourists and not locals.

GMan,

Surely, 'Squids' are pretty damp anyway are they not?

Squibs on the other hand...

Dear Mr. Irvine, the quotes attributed to you show you up in a very bad light indeed.
"...as the concert has always been geared towards a family event and this year we want to give it a bit more of a harder edge..." by which I suppose you mean that Hogmanay is not a family event and that a "harder edge" has got implications which barely need spelled out. And instead of calling the event The Concert in the Gardens, shouldn't it now be the "Rock Concert in the Gardens But Not for Families."
I think I now know why so many people have posted items in these pages which criticise you.

........and I suppose that with their behavioural issues and being named after a member of the Charles Manson "family" I wouldn't be that far off the mark either with regard to Kasabian. Not a family event.
Well done, Mr. Irvine for alienating a whole lot more people.

Whit's a Kasabian?

#10 Not a family event??????

Kasabian just stand up there and play guitars. Hardly a frightening experience.

I'm sure there were plenty of kids at the Razorlight gig in the summer. This would be exactly the same. Rather this lot than the bloody Scissor Sisters, Keane etc.

Duncan still in Edinburgh,

What's wrong with the Scissor Sisters? I think they're ace.

Seen Kasabian live,wouldn't recommend it.

Laughing Cow,

Kasabian are one of the finest live bands in the country - tempted to go to this now. Nice work from the organisers.

Let`s hope they rock this sorry debacle of a street party into oblivion.

Harry Ranch,

#12 WTF are you on about?? How can you possibly compare Kasabian to Razorlight?

"All Kasabian do is stand there and play guitars." Haha good son!

Kasabian ARE in the top 5 band's in probably the word at the moment, so to get them playing on NYE in the gardens is a massive coup for the city.

#14 Wouldnt recommend it!!??
Either you are deaf or stupid, possibly both. Even if they are not your cup of tea musically, no one can deny that they are a quite exceptional live band who are the perfect act to make this year's Hogmany party the best ever. The crowd buzz of them and vice versa. Its truly an amazing experiece to see Kasabian live. I've seen them at the small venue that is the Corn Exchange (Not Meadowbank Mr Edwards!) last year and the wide open space of T in the Park and they blew me away with their sheer energy. Not anevent to miss. Idlewild are legends too, well done organisers (for a change).

19

Blondie,

02/11/2007 14:07:27

#7 and 10 Why would it not be a "family event" just because Kasabian are playing? If you think your kids are going to be corrupted in some way, I'm sure the Singing Kettle usually do Christmas shows in Edinburgh! Haven't we had enough of wrapping up kids in cotton wool without starting on music?

20

Bobby Mo,

Kasabian's house 02/11/2007 14:09:20

Kasabian are a very good band, and a good choice for headliners.

21

calum,

#19 - Good one. Let's just see the following that they attract and how the friendly convivial ambience of a traditional Scottish Hogmanay is enhanced as the revellers mingle in joyous harmony!! Aye right! This has nothing to do with celebrating Hogmanay, it's a rock concert co-incidentally held at Hogmanay.

22

Blondie,

02/11/2007 15:30:12

#21
I don't remember the "friendly, convivial ambience of a traditional Scottish Hogmanay" ever being that family-friendly, to be honest! And surely your comments would apply no matter which band was headlining the event?

23

Leila,

02/11/2007 16:39:05

Pete Irvine's Hogmanay has never been a family event I don't know anyone who would even consider taking their family anywhere near Princes Street at Hogmanay.

However it'll be interesting to see what the "major new" family event is.

24

Toast,

02/11/2007 17:19:49

#18 I saw them at Ibiza and they were out of tune and most of the vocals drowned out, funnily enough I took my daughter to see Razorlight,Foo Fighters and The View at Meadowbank, all of whom were miles better.

25

Billy Effluvia,

Dumfries 02/11/2007 17:55:58

I have it on good authority that the "major new family event" involves Mr Blobby, a ukelele and a jar of mayonnaise.

Poor Pete Irvine, despite two total washouts in 3 years, and some very close calls to disaster before that, he's still flogging the same old dead horse - more like a one trick pony. It's Over, Pete - your influential, junket-addicted pals are no longer in the Police and on the Cooncil, the money stream has dried up, your personal gravy train's off the rails. Embra in midwinter's a dodgy bet for an outdoor rock concert, and the rest of your 'formula' is looking pretty tired now. Why not quit before some very difficult questions start being asked?
