HE NORMALLY arrives in the Capital on a sleigh led by reindeers – but this year Santa is coming to town on a vintage London bus.
Owner Sam Phipps, from Leith, is inviting the public aboard his treasured 1962 Routemaster for the first time, for festive tours of the city.

The father-of-three, 45, said: "I use the bus for private parties and weddings, which are great, but no
w I really want the public to see it as well.

"Often when I drive past, people stare or children wave – it's the only one of its kind in Edinburgh."

Mr Phipps and his wife, Clunie, 44, bought the red double-decker two years ago from a dealer in Newcastle, in mint condition with all its original 1960s features.

The bus was decommissioned in 1987 and had been bought by a transport enthusiast in Wales, before making its way north of the Border with the Phipps family, who store it in Leith when it is not in use.

Mr Phipps – who also drives the bus – has been eagerly sitting the necessary exams to allow him to invite the public aboard, which he will do for the first time in mid-December with a week of tours of the city three times a day, each for different age groups.

Customers will be able to buy tickets from the Red Bus website, www.theredbus.co.uk, and choose which trip suits them – from daytime outings for youngsters with onboard musical entertainment and Santa, to evening jaunts through the city in the dark. Mr Phipps plans to roll out more of the trips next year, introducing his number 88 Red Bus to Festival audiences, as well as, potentially, to book enthusiasts for literary tours of the Capital.

He said: "When I first got the bus I did think about using it for a totally different purpose, possibly as a cafe. But then I thought no.

"It was built to transport people and I wanted to keep it for that. It's great fun."

Unlike many 1960s Routemasters, the bus was never refurbished to lose its authentic red livery, tartan moquette seating and tungsten lighting.

Mr Phipps said: "People just really like the bus when they see it. Children seem to love climbing the stairs to sit on the top, yet others rush to the front near the driving seat so they can see exactly what is going on."

Having been to a private party aboard this very bus, I can highly recommend Mr Phipps and his bus.

For once it's nice to see a shameless plug by the EEN.

Why did they ever get rid of the Routemasters?! They were and still are the best bus for public transport out there.

I was wondering what would be described as "iconic" in the News today. Something always is.

If it's iconic, can't they just park it at Haymarket, fit a few bedrooms and save us all a lot of bother.

2: Ken Livingstone before become Mayor promised to retain Routemasters on all central London routes. Like many other politicians when elected, he went back on his word. He and the Labour party directly responsible for scrapping them. The new Mayor, Boris Johnston, has promised to look at another version of type which is still at drawing board stage.

1: Agreed. This well worth a look as kept in original condition.

I think that we should bring back routemaster buses for all the grumpy bus-drivers who don't like passengers. It might also keep the buses moving a bit more if we stopped payment at the stops. Most of the time I'm on a bus it seems to be sitting behind other buses at stops.

Nice piece of advertising though.

Oh well if we're going to have idiots talking about grumpy bus drivers, let's do bring back the routemasters and then that will be the end of all the buggies demanding to get on the bus!! Idiot number 7 - Stick to the topic!!!

The Routemaster may be iconic in London but not here in Edinburgh. A Leyland PD3 would be better ....... arrrggghhh, I must be an anorak!

I hate the word "iconic" - it is so overused it appears several times every day in the EEN - stop it now!

10 - Ah, happy days on the 18s/20s/26s! The earlier PD2 with Metro-Cammell bodywork was sooooo Edinburgh and was, just to introduce a tram theme, bought in great numbers to replace the trams.
Oh no, I must be an anorak after all...... No, just happy schooldays with the lassies from .... never mind!

You can go on a Routemaster in Edinburgh any day on the MAC TOUR.

"it's the only one of its kind in Edinburgh".

14# Hoof,
You just beat me to it. Indeed the MacTours buses are all ex London Routemasters albeit they have been converted with variable open tops, fully automatic transmission and rear platform doors for elfansafety.

Will we now see bus wars breaking out? Lothian Buses has never taken kindly to competition on their patch.

#9 and 13 Calum
Did you know there are three of your favourite Embrugh Leyland PD2's over at Lathalmond, one recently beautifully restored to it's new 1957 condition in wonderful madder and white!
